How is it possible for a Caravel to sail back into a city whose only adjacent coastal tiles are occupied by (non-allied, therefore hostile) rival Privateers?

I guess the computer had an event or quest reward recieving an extra caravel... There is no other way, unless there's a bug involving the production of two caravels instead of one.

If that were the case, where did that one Caravel go? Even if it had 3 movement modifiers (which it didn't, it had none) and could move 6 points, it's nowhere to be seen (and you can see everything in WorldBuilder), and there's no other enemy units to run into except the two Privateers. Since those Privateers belong to me, I know for sure the Caravel didn't run into them.

OK, I went back to the WB and gave that Caravel 1 XP. In the next turn, all three Caravel in Karakarum had 0 XP, which means the Caravel from previous turn has disappeared into thin air, while two new Caravels have arrived in Karakorum. That is even more strange than flying Caravel, I have to say.

My Privateers were the only non-Mongolian naval units in the vicinity, and if they were attacked, it would have shown in the log, which it didn't.

Yes, that looks like the most likely scenario now, but what possible reason could there be for it?
Maybe he had run out of gold and couldn't afford the unit support costs. Or maybe he just really wanted to get back to that city, and got upset that he couldn't.

I've see AI settlers disappear after awhile of being trapped in bad spots by closed borders. I suppose the AI realizes that the settler has nowhere to go - indefinitely, so it just deletes it to save money. Maybe your caravel is the same?

I'm not sure whether you mean Unit Cost or Supply Cost when you say "support cost", but either one makes sense, since Mongolia keeps producing more Caravels and sending them out. As for "nowhere to go", that's also not true: Turfan is a perfect place to go.

Seriously, Turfan is an amazing place to visit. I've been there in RL. ;)
