Here is an interesting article, in which a priest raises a few valid points about our view of the most well-known symbol of christianity, the crucifix.

Full story...

Do you think the representation of christ dying on a cross is a proper symbol for this religion?

Opinions?

I think the crucifix is okay. It is an execution device, but it serves as a symbol of Christ's victory over death. And who cares that he was naked? Sex had nothing to do with it.

All said, it's still just a symbol. Make your own if you want. ;)

He makes a good point that the reserrection is the true symbol of Christianity, but how does one make a visual symbol of it?

I think a buddy Jesus figure is more suitable.

I think JC should be rebranded as a jovial and good-humoured symbol.

After all, he is about life, yes?

Jesus' death is just as much a part of it as the resurrection. Had he not been willing to die on a cross, none of the other stuff would have happened. I think it's just fine.

I wonder how many people actually see the crucifix for what it is (an execution device) and just see the cross as a symbol rather than the meaning behind it?

After all if it was meant to be a strict representation then it would be a plain wooden cross rather than the embellished silver item most often seen.

Just a random thought...

He's happy, He's scrappy, He's the Son of God!

If Jesus had died by slipping on a banana peel, the christian symbol might be Jesus falling backward yelling "WHOOOAA!". Or if he died choking on a chicken bone the symbol would be a Roman Centurion doing the Heimlich Manuever on him:eek:

I like the little fishies.

The "Fish Club" at my school [euphemistic name for "Christian Club For Fundies and Anyone Who Ain't In It Is Goin' Straight To Flamin' Heck!"] put up a bunch of giant posters with that fish symbol on them, and nothing else.

Over the weekend someone :mischief: sneaked into the school and wrote "Gefilte" inside all the fish! :D

What does Gefilte mean.

Shouldn't really be a sybol at all, what are they worshiping God or a cross? if anything i would guess that a good symbol would be a cave with a big bolder beside the entrance.

ya what's a Gefilte

you guys dont know what a Gefilte fish is...

:nono: shame on you, it may be nasty, but its a (european) Jewish passover tradition.

all I know about Gefilte is that its a fish used in traditional jewish cooking and I think it is a dish served during passover.

EDIT: beat me xen, now I must kill you

sorry i don't keep up on the jewish holidays since im a gentile

The cruxifix is used as the symbol because the thing that we have to remember is the sacrifice that Christ made on the cross. Although the Resurection is the central mystery and most important aspect of the faith, we need to remember what Jesus did so WE could be resurected.

If Jesus had died today, would Christianity's symbol be Jesus strapped to an electric chair? That would be so totally cool...

Or, alternatively, bound to that lethal injection table thingy... it would actually even resemble a cross, and Jesus would have a IV line running out of his arm...
