Halfway Shocks in FRA D2
As the French Second Division season reaches its midpoint, the battle for promotion is still close with the first 5 teams separated by 3 points. However, the leaders are not the preseason favorites, who have slumped unexpectedly this season. Chateauroux, managed by Dan Kearns, head the division with 33 points after some great results that have surprised everyone, including the fans who had hoped their team might manage to scrape third place at best but now see their team at the top. In second is another surprise, with Angers lying in second place on 32 points. The first of the big name teams, Bastia, lie in third, also on 32 points. After Bastia were relegated last season, it was expected that they would challenge for a return and so far they have. After winning their last game away to Wasquehal, and Chateauroux dropping two points at home, fans will be hopeful that Bastia will achieve their aim.
As we have seen some new teams leading the division, there have also been some old teams that have lost out. Saint Etienne had hoped that after a season of disappointment they would be able to return to the Championnat after this season, but their recent bad form has left them outside of the promotion spaces, but still with a chance of winning promotion.
The real surprise strugglers this season are Creteil and AS Beauvais Oise, lying in 15th and 16th, respectively. Both teams won promotion two seasons ago and both teams were relegated the next year. However, with this experience of top-flight football, the fans of both teams were hoping for a quick return that just hasnt materialized. It looked like a difficult season was lying in wait for ASBO from the start of the season, with 5 draws followed by a defeat not classifying as promotion winning form. Whilst Creteil have also struggled, it seems that it is the ASBO fans that are most upset as they saw their team nearly avoid relegation last season, whilst Creteil had gone down long before the end of the season. Several quarters are now calling for ASBO manager Matthew Bradley to quit the club, and we await an answer to these requests with a wall of silence from ASBO over the speculation.
In recent weeks we have also seen the arrival of several new managers: Volum Jonsson at Olympique Nice, Tony Puhl at Montpellier Herault, and Matthew Baxter at Chamois Niortais. Time will tell whether these new managers can guide their teams to success.
