Galactic Civ 3 is being made?

This is news to me!

No! not yet. But Brad said it would use the Elemental engine.

That means GalCiv III will have features like tactical battles (as an option), multiplayer, more sophisticated planetary development, and much more.

And of course the mentioned "unnamed fantasy strategy game" is Elemental.

My fear is that they're going to spend so much time trying to grandfather in tactical battles and such that they'll leave out the basics and the details that made GC2 so great. That they'll lose focus on the fact that GCIII should be a 4x game, not a tactical space combat game.

Well, they'll need to make tactical battles work in Elemental first, they already exist there, but they are in dire need of improvement. Currently they are focusing on Elemental anyway since in a way their credibility as a game developer hinges on fixing it. If they manage to fix it in the end (which includes tactical battles), then I think they'll have enough experience with this feature to make it work in GalCiv3 too. MoO1 and MoO2 have already proven that space strategy, ship design, and tactical battles can work well together.

However, they really have to concentrate on Elemental first and save it; otherwise, in a worst-case scenario, there won't even be a GalCiv3.
