Forests are very important:
- chop them early and get a huge boost, let them grow and with lumbermills they are invaluable late, what do you do....
The 'General' Rule
1. If you are going to leave forests in your city radius ("fatcross") leave either 3 or 5 tiles forested; Each forest gives 0.4 health, 3=+1.2 health, 5=+2 health. Having 4 is not better than 3, so chop 1. Having 2 is not better than having 0, so chop them both.
Specific Rules
2. Never chop forest on tundra
3. Chop forest on a vital Resource/Farm area FIRST (it will go anyway)
4. Chop forest on hills only if you NEED the mine now (you will be better off with the lumbermill if you can wait).
5. Always chop forests that are outside your "fatcross" of city production - I especially like to chop forests that are future "enemy territory" in border cities that have yet to expand their culture (gives my border city a nice set of walls and a couple of archers!).
