fortress/barricade question and suggestion needed.

I used a 'maginot line' sort of defense very succesfully in a recent game: all i did was build barricades along my land border one-deep w/no units manning them. my enemy comes over to attack, is forced to stop at the barricaded border, than i just moved in my artillery (keep 30-100 available depending on world size) and red-lined the invading units, followed by destruction with whatever unit i want, although i kill the final invader with a mobile unit (horseman/knight/cavalry/tank/bomber/hwacha etc...) so i don't have to leave a unit directly on the barricaded border, where it is exposed to enemy attack during the interturn. i don't have to spend labor building barricades 2-deep along my border, and i don't have to keep the border manned with defenders. caveat: you have to be able to kill all invading units on the turn on which they arrive so they don't attack your cities next turn...

The best way to use Baricades and fortresses is the folowing.

1. MAke a long border of them that is one, solid line. It has to be mad so that no matter HOW they try to enter your terrritory they HAVE to pass over a baricade. Also, one tile behind the baricades have a road. THat way all the baricades are connected to each other.

2. Put 2 "Defense Units (spear, pike, musket, rileman ect ect)" on each baricade.

3. For every 4 baricades have a stack of 10-20 "fast" units. (horseman, kinight, calv, tanks.)

Now. If the enemy attacks they have to deal with two or three VERY tough defensive units. If their SoD survives then the adjacants fortresses get a free shot at the enemy as they move to your baricade. THen they havreto stop. HAve your fast units hit their attacking units. THe attackers will probably have low defense. Once you take the tile back over rush in new defenders.

Note: THat is just the way i do it. BUt i am usaly small and way behind in military now that i am playing regent. Dang its hard....

I think a nice feature would be if cities and/or fortresses/barricades prevent lethal bombardement of land units. E.g. you will be down to 1 HP, but get not destroyed at all as Greyhawk already complained about the absolute power of bombers in another recent thread.

Yes, in PTW I edit bombers to have lethal bombard against ships, but when I get Conquests I'm going to take away their lethal land bombard.

Are your troops slowed by barricades within your own cultural borders? I assume not but someone said something somewhere that left me wondering.

Quick question on fortresses and barracks:

Does anyone else use them or am I wasting precious worker time doing this.
YES!! :) (To the FIRST question.)

Play a defensive game at SID Level on a Tiny Map......Barricades can be especially useful if you're waaaaay behind in development. ;)

For example, if you have a fortified spearman on a mountain, barricaded........it has the slight edge over an attacking Cavalry unit! (6.50:6) ;)
Also, get artillery pieces such as catapults if you're no match for the AI's attacking units!

IMHO, If you're playing at a level where YOU can BEAT the AI, you don't need 'em! (If you want to give your workers something to do......plant a forest on each eligible tile AND then chop them down!)

Barricades are actually quite useful in certain situations, especially in the modern age, where the AI can send large stacks of modern armor at your cities, and hit you full force in one turn.

A recent game of mine involved me fighting Persia, who were many techs ahead. They had modern armor, while I was defending with infantry and artillery. I had an established beachhead on their continent, with three cities containing lots of artillery and a handful of infantry. I built barricades in every square in my territory, unmanned, in order to stop the AI stacks short of my cities. When the Persians declared war, they sent a pretty large force, which got caught up in my barricades. I was able to pound the stack down with my artillery and drive them away, keeping my beachhead intact to continue transporting units over. Had I not had the barricades, my cities on their continent would have been overrun immediately, destroying my foothold on their continent and making a future win impossible.

I ended up winning the game more thanks to the barricades than anything else :D
