Forts - what good are they?

I know what you mean... I merged the RealFort mod into mine but its one of the few features the AIs won't use... The problem is that untill we can edit the AIs files (probobly require the SDK) we can't do much about it.

Though I don't worry about it much anyway because i have never seen the AI build an unmodded fort anyway :lol:

Again, a problem! The only Civ game in which the AI would build forts, was Civ2. But in 2 there were no borders, there were shield (hammer) maintenance per unit as well as unhappiness when a unit was outside the city in which it was built, except when they stayed within two squares of that city. And that's where the AI would build its forts (which by the way looked nothing like forts).

If Firaxis were a European company, I am convinced the AI would know how to build forts (read: castles). They're everywhere -- standing or ruined -- their one-time importannce cannot be stressed enough!

sorry, but this is not right. The AI built forts at choke points, where it really made sense. they did not build whole front lines with forts, but chokes points they did.

Yes, but that was a rare occurance, to say the least!
 
Modded or not, I've never seen the AI build a fort in Civ IV ... I dare say that it's not part of the current AI routines, modded or not.

I think I know why. The programmer of the AI knew that forts are totally useless features :crazyeye:

hehe actually that might not be far fetched... AIs don't use Submarines for the same reason. I modded them to be better (Composite Mod) and now the AI makes use of them... and sometimes frustrates the heck out of me when I can't catch them :P
 
HA! I've never seen the AI use a sub either! I can't wait to get that far in your mod, Exavier :p

What did you do to the Subs?
 
Zone of control was a great strategy feature in civ 1 and 2, and removing it in civ 3 and 4 was a step backwards IMO.
 
I asked for ZoC for forts in their Poll ... I don't hold out much hope, but I think it would be logical and make them much more useful.

Regular Sub
28 Strength
+100% Attack vs Transports
+75% Attack vs Carriers
+25% Attack vs Battleships (its a big ship)
+25% Attack vs Nuclear Sub (Bigger sub is easier to hit)

Nuclear Sub
32 Strength
+100% Attack vs Transports
+75% Attack vs Carriers
+25% Attack vs Battleships (its a big ship)
-25% Attack vs Regular Sub (Smaller sub is harder to hit)
Carries 5 Tactical ICBMs (modifyed ICBM, good for hiding nuclear arsanels in MP games)

I might be a bit off on the bonuses... oh also planes get huge negitive attack penalties vs subs (hard to carpet bomb something underwater)

AI loves using these to pillage your fishing boats :P

EDIT: I should also note that Destroyers can't see subs in my mod (but they can kill them). I made an Aegis Cruiser thats a sub spotter (mainly as the Destroyer is 2 common, and takes the fun out of subs). I also made Aircraft Recon able to see subs :P
