Fox-03 -- Trying to be Special

blid, I actually already used the GS for Philo on my final turn. I didn't then check what that would do for bribing Alex to go to war but namliaM should see what Alex wants.

I like the idea of getting him to go for Loius instead of Qin but again, I'll let him take a look at the save and make a choice on whether Qin is a big threat or not.

I was going to suggest us going for Qin as soon as possible but he took the initiative for me.

Rushing walls sounds like a sound plan in Frankfurt. I should have done that previously  .

Seems like Alex already knows Philo. Too bad. namliaM, up to you to decide. War progression with Qin should tell. Just keep funding the treasury meanwhile and see what it would be best used for.

I see JC has a city south of Qin :crazyeye: Did he cross at the poles or what ?

blid, you are right. I opened up the save and Alex won't go to war with Louis for guilds but he will got to war with Qin for it. I wonder how much gold we would need to get him to go for it. If we wait too long then we might loose Guilds as our bargaining chip.

Back in 1270 AD, he was willing to go to war for guilds and 130g.
That is 2 turns of saving. Worth a try

What a furball!

If Aliex is willing to close his borders to the belligerents that is almost as good as a war declaration, and in some ways almost better as they can't use his ground to approach us, and will narrow the front a little.

Appears that Frankfurt is everyone's favorite town and that is a good thing.

I think we may want to switch our research path to towards Guns and Chemistry. Cho no ku are hard on maces but will fall to grenadiers. And let's not neglect the navy now that we have Optics. That means setting a course for Astronomy. Lots of choices, here, but I think the overall path is clear: :hammer:

Wow! I went to bed last night and, two pages later, the whole world turned upside down on us.

Quoted by me on the 25th:

I first check the diplomacy screen...Louis is +4. Alex is +3 and Qin is +1.

So our two best hopes in the popularity contest are Alex and Louis. Those are two guys I never try to triangle with as they're both as fickle as the weather in Boston. However, they're +8 and +9 toward each other.

Looks like I should have trusted my instincts. Has anyone else noticed that Louis and Alex are both willing to be bribed into war with people they're very friendly with? This is about the third or fourth time Louis has turned on me unexpectedly.

I think that puffy little pansy's gonna have to go on my permanent "must kill" list right next to the Kahn family.

Edit: Also quoted by me on the 25th:

I've started moving a few newly-hatched troops east just in case.

Can I suppose those troops found themselves drawn to Rome for mysterious reasons? Never trust three back-stabbers all on one front.

Kikinit said:
As an aside which was important at the time but other pressing things seemed to take precedence, I set Karakorum (GP city) to max food to get it to grow out as fast as possible to support as many specialists as possilbe. I also converted the hills to windmills to make them food neutral.
Eh? I would say we want mines and lots of them, we have food enough there... Wondercity GP farm? or is it all about specialists? Cause if its specialists only, then we dont want the hills at all...

I thought that for GP farm you want to make it as food positive as possible? Those hills still produce hammers with a windmill on them. I guess I need to go back and look at our GP farm from Fox01 and try and recall how we did it there.

Kikinit: in fox-01, ruff_hi pointed out, which I agree, that a GP-Farm only works on tile with extra food. So makinga tile food neutral is as good as not having any food. I think we could mine some of the hills, so that the GP-Farm can be switched to yield extra hammers as and when necessary.

Bede: Yes, it does appear that military path is the way to go. I am still puzzled by the the map, seems more like playing on a pangea than continents.

Rex: okay, you are officially crowned as the oracle. Care to tell me singapore's lottery number tomorrow?

A new Governer steps up to the plate, as the previous one got 3 strikes from Qin.

So its up to the new man to save Frankfurt from the hard winding, slide ball throwing Qin.
This is the situation at the plate...
Civ4ScreenShot0084.jpg

So I have a look around the place as I am warming up. I spot a candy seller guy in the stand and for good measure pick up some loose change for some corn on the calb (spelling?)

To make the reseller a little more happy I gift him some Sheep so he can enjoy the warm wool. This is to be renegotiated ASAP. No such thing as a freebee offcourse except at your local BP petrol station.

On the Innerturn, the stack outside of Frankfurt strikes without much success...

Pikeman defeats (2.94/6): Chinese Knight 1-0
Maceman defeats (2.56/8): Chinese Knight 2-0
Maceman defeats (6.72/8): Chinese War Elephant 3-0
Maceman defeats (6.80/8): Chinese Maceman 4-0
After which it is my turn

Pikeman loses to: Chinese War Elephant (2.48/8) 62+% 4-1
Pikeman defeats (6.00/6): Chinese War Elephant 5-1
Longbowman defeats (3.84/6): French Warrior 1-0
Maceman defeats (6.72/8): Chinese War Elephant 6-1
Knight defeats (8.60/10): Chinese Catapult 7-1
Knight defeats (6.10/10): Chinese Catapult 8-1

The next 2 swings (turns) end up faul balls, as nothing much happenes. But for a little bombarding.
Then this:
Axeman loses to: Chinese Knight (3.20/10) 8-2
Which is a sign for me to enlist some help, but whats this?

No more help available?? Aarch... You gotta be kidding...

Same year we spot the first French Contingents..... Ouch...

They seem to be heading NW, not towards Frankfurt as expected??? Ok I will start sending some troops toward Karakorum and such. Also start walls in our northern towns (Karakorum and up).
And just for good measure ... Knight defeats (0.50/10): Chinese Knight 9-2 another Chinese knight bites the dust...

On the northern front we start making some progress, the defencive bonus is finaly gone and I sacrifice some Cats
Catapult loses to: Chinese Longbowman (6.00/6) 9-3
Catapult loses to: Chinese Longbowman (4.56/6) 9-4
While I am sacrificing the Cats, I hear a horn. WTH what now? A our friend comes to help. Alex DoWs on Qin without request?! Good...
The battle for Shandong begins OK, but...
Knight defeats (3.70/10): Chinese Pikeman 10-4
Knight defeats (8.00/10): Chinese Longbowman 11-4
Crossbowman loses to: Chinese Knight (1.80/10) 11-5 (at good odds)
Maceman defeats (4.40/8): Chinese Knight 12-5

Captured Shandong (Qin Shi Huang)
The timing of the attack on Shangdong was so that the French were to far away from the town to take it (atleast the two stack that were moving NW) But whats this? Strike 1? Another French stack heading NW. And sure enough the knight turns around and razes Shangdong...
Maceman loses to: French Knight (8.20/10) 1-1
Shandong lost

Offcourse the knight is dealt with.... swiftly, however we lose a Mace vs a HA...
Knight defeats (3.60/10): French Knight 2-1
Maceman loses to: French Horse Archer (1.86/6) 2-2
Maceman defeats (8.00/8): French Horse Archer 3-2

On the previous spot of Shangdong there is a small contingent of Alex' heading south... I dont think we have much to worry about anymore regarding Qin...

But the French stack have me concerned a little...

I forget to make screenies after this, cause it gets kind of crazy....

Having said that, offcourse is asking for the RNG to go freaky on you... As I am still bombing the defenses of Guangzhou (or something like that)
Pikeman loses to: Chinese Knight (0.80/10) 12-6
Pikeman loses to: Chinese Knight (5.60/10) 12-7
I missed a french Cross and Cat and so due to a :smoke: moment on my part...Worker loses to: French Catapult (5.00/5) 3-3 we are down a worker... Aaargh....

Next we get a visit from some not so nice things...
Maceman defeats (8.00/8): Chinese Catapult 13-7
Maceman defeats (6.96/8): Chinese Catapult 14-7
Maceman defeats (2.64/8): Chinese Cho-Ko-Nu 15-7
Maceman defeats (0.48/8): French Knight 4-3
And we lose one of our Religious people... another :smoke: from me...
Confucian Missionary loses to: French Crossbowman (6.00/6)4-4

This goes on at Karakorum:
Knight defeats (3.20/10): French Maceman 5-4
Knight defeats (8.40/10): French Maceman 6-4
Knight defeats (10.00/10): French Spearman 7-4
Folowed by stomething you allready know... I am still lost at what to do whith him i would probably join him to some city....
Harkuf (Merchant) (Great Merchant) born in Frankfurt
Then another :smoke: I put a cat on a "long" trip north and it finishes near a french Cross, which offcourse takes it out....
Catapult loses to: French Crossbowman (2.16/6) 7-5
Note to selve, when at war... Dont use long "goto's"

More happenings at Karakorum (which has some extra walls for defence)
Knight defeats (3.60/10): French Crossbowman 8-5
Pikeman defeats (5.22/6): French Horse Archer 9-5
Swordsman defeats (2.16/6): French Catapult 10-5
Knight defeats (4.50/10): French Catapult 11-5
But our forces at Karakorum are starting to get tired....

And I start the 'real' offensive on the southern chinese town... IIRC 1 cat actually stays alive but the other 2 perish in their suicide ...
Catapult loses to: Chinese Longbowman (3.66/6)15-8
Catapult loses to: Chinese Knight (5.60/10) 15-9
Maceman defeats (8.00/8): Chinese Longbowman 16-9
Maceman defeats (6.16/8): Chinese Knight 17-9
Maceman defeats (5.04/8): Chinese Pikeman 18-9
Captured Guangzhou (Qin Shi Huang)
More RNG happiness. The chinese knight wipes out our cross bow at Guang without a scratch on him....
Crossbowman loses to: Chinese Knight (10.00/10) 18-10
Maceman loses to: French Knight (3.20/10) 18-11
The mace vs Knight thing makes a little more sence...

Crossbowman loses to: Chinese Knight (10.00/10) 18-12
Maceman loses to: French Knight (3.20/10) 11-6

Crossbowman defeats (6.00/6): French Crossbowman 12-6
Catapult loses to: French Maceman (8.00/8) Suicided against the stack 12-7
Pikeman loses to: French Knight (3.40/10) RNG really dont like me... :aargh: 12-8
Maceman defeats (8.00/8): French Knight Mope up from the previous ... 13-8
Knight loses to: Chinese Knight (5.40/10) 18-12 :wallbash:

To finish some picks of our current situation:

In the green circel our strike force for Kaifeng (not much) and I am not willing to chance it with my luck. I took a Knight from that stack to attack the Chinese knight in the red circel but as you know by now... It failed....
In blue box a Knight and Cat heading for Karakorum most likely....

The situation at Tarfun, Due SE the Mace that Mopped up the knight in my previous post. NW another :smoke: on my part.... N a French Cross..

The cooperative situation at Gaungzhou ???

Note we are now the #1 in score and we are underway to Gunpowder which I thought would be much more benificial than banking. We dont even have markets up where we need them, what do we do with banks?

And the somewhat concerning situation at Karakorum

And finaly the save

Up to Bede to save the day... (of Karakorum)

Longbowman defeats (3.84/6): French Warrior 1-0

Louis brought a warrior to a 14th century war??? I thought the AI upgraded for either free or way cheap. What's this dude still hanging around for?

Also, it's tough to gauge the magnitude of the situation. I'll look into the save and see if I can offer any strategy. All in all, NamliaM, it looks like you had some damn hectic turns there. You only lost the one city that you had captured the previous turn, right? So we're not any worse off than we were before your turns. The first 10 are always the toughest. If we can out-produce from here on out, we should be fine, especially with the tech advantage.

Also, remember the rock-paper-scissors aspect of this game. Build pikemen for knights, crossbows for maces, and knights for killing cho-ko-nu before they get anywhere near your cities. Fear the chucks!

Good turns. Bede shall smite them, methinks.

Looks like I abandoned ship at the right time

That's some hairy action there namliaM. Good job on holding things together even with the RNGod trying to spite you. And good call on giving banking a miss for a while. That tech was chosen before we had these two declare on us.

Is there any way we can get Alex to close his borders with the french? That was what I feared when I read you say they were heading NW. Bloody Alex is letting us get raped up the rear.

EDIT: Have we got Nationalism or are we anywhere near being able to get it? It would be handy right now to be able to draft. I can't load the save from where I am to recall where we are tech wise.

Nationalism is probably a good way off yet and won't do us as much good as grenadiers which cost less than draftees and are more effective at this stage. Drafting for rifles is a good ploy as the pop cost is much less than the hammer cost but has greater happy cost.

Oh what to do, what to do? How about pick up the save and find the jawbone of my ass?

And see if Alex will close his borders to the lace wearing pansy.
Philistines.

While attacking, Catapult loses to: Chinese Longbowman (3.84/6)
While attacking, Catapult loses to: Chinese Longbowman (3.06/6)
Research begun: Banking but set at zero until we can upgrade some maces.

Amd here we stand at the gates of Shanghai. Nobody else has enough force to take the city but we need to kill a couple of ChoNoKu before we can be sure of getting it. So wait for the grenadiers from Guangzhou to arrive (newly upgraded and not yet moved into place). There are more cats, knights and maces on the way in to reinforce the stack at Shanghai.

Munich(PROD) begins: Maceman keep producing them. They get CR promotions and will be unstoppable when upgraded to grenadiers and are cheaper to produce.
Cologne(HYB) begins: Maceman

Nice nice nice.... And so quick too, guess thats the advantage of East-west rotation...

I would have never thought to check if
1) France or Qin would want peace
2) France declare war on Qin? Geez...

What mod(s) do you have Bede? That turn thing, that Kaifeng looks awfull nice... and the While attacking and While defending... Is this the HOF mod?
