Fox-03 -- Trying to be Special

It is roman culture. So this means a conquered city won't get back to owner civ ever ? even if it all surrounded by its culture ?
I fear it will keep revolting too. Need to clean the area
AFAIK: Keep revolting, yes. Flip over to Roman, no.

Oh, sorry for not connecting the galley with the two horse archers. Ok. Hmmm .. spear is strength 4+4=8, HA is strength 6, ambiphious attack is 50% penatly, so his total 2 HA is strength 6 .... JC is pretty lucky to not have lost both HA.

--

I've got it. Not really sure what the heck I'm supposed to be doing though. I am looking at the save and notice that we don't have WW at all really but we are running low on research @40%. Thanks for the little signs everywhere blid. Quite useful.

I think we should be continuing to rape and pillage through JC's lands.

(0)-1200AD -- We're not producing much military are we? We are at war you know.

Civ4ScreenShot0071.jpg

I MM'd around our cities to get us from -18gpt or so to 0gpt at 40% research. We should be getting a Great Engineer in about 4 turns (RNGod permitting). What do we want to do with him? [EDIT] Or we can have a scientist if we want to by running a couple of specialists in Hamburg. What would we prefer? An engineer or scientist?

That's all I've played for now. More later.

Both are good, GS is more immediately useful, since there is no near-term world wonder that we need. Beshbalik could really use an academy.

We have tons of army. I wouldn't build anymore, unless you want to kill JC. Our main tasks is to get couthouses up and running, and build us the Forbidden Palace.

--

"Unless you want to kill JC," Fox? Why would you ever *not* want to kill JC? That fargin ice-hole is just about always on my "must go" list. (Come to think of it, so're Alex, Mao, and just about everyone else.)

Where's Bede? The mongers in this game to speak out. :aargh: :ar15: :spank: :satan: :hammer:

How 'bout kill him now, extort Compass off of someone else, kill that someone else 10 turns later, extort Optics off yet another, kill yet another 10 turns later, and save 20 turns?

So much killin' there, you're bound to keep some glory for yourself.

@Kikinit : Munich is spitting 2 units per 3 turn. And we have a huge army already. We really need to work on economy a bit. And I went mad about lighthouses to work coastal tiles and get colossus benefit everywhere.

I would not consider signing peace before takeing/razing city north of Anitum. There's some cats/knights reinforcements heading north.

And what about trying to get compass somehow from another AI and extort optics from JC

Use the strength you've got and our biggest strength right now is military. If we can finish Caesar by all means do it, that is just one less rival to worry about and the neighbors will love us for it.

As far as I can remember these guys started on us and now we have them on the mat, why let him up even for a bit?

I don't know if any discussion was held regarding desired victory but after a rocky start we seem to be well on our way to Conquest or Domination. If it means putting up with slower research for a few more sets we will only come out stronger in the end. Use the whip where needed to get the courthouses up. And if we have currency (and I'm pretty sure we do get those markets in place where they will do the most good).

I am not a big fan the oscillating war for tech. You get into a war weariness cycle that is just plain painful. If we can get JC down to one tundra town then we can think about extorting techs from him.

Bede, have you found that the AI is willing to do that? It's looked to me like the AI will only trade techs when they have something to lose. The three-ice-tiles-and-a-beaver civ usually seems to adopt the "what're you gonna do, take away my beaver?" attitude with me.

As you can see I don't go to war for tech very often.....so if they don't want to co-operate I just take the beaver.

Things go well until...

Ok.. I've done my turn 0 so now on with the game. I've chosen to take the scientist and see what happens.

Turn 1 -- 1210AD
Berlin (Science): Lighthouse -> Catapult as there are no science buildings to build.
Munich (Production): Knight -> Catapult (in 1)
Cologne (Hybrid): Courthouse -> Maceman
Turfan (Financial): Granary -> Courthouse
Antium (???): Lighthouse to get it some food. It hasn't been designated yet but a lighthouse is permitted first in any case so I can ask for an opinion. Here's a picture of it. I think it should be science as we've got too many financial and we need to boost our science.

Civ4ScreenShot0080.jpg

Turn 2 -- 1220AD
Munich (Prod): Catapult -> Knight (in 3)

Just thought I'd give a pic now of our financial situation. Needs some work on it to get us above 40% and war isn't helping that. Looking into the numbers, city maintenance is hurting and every unit now is going to cost us more money. Some things to work on.

Civ4ScreenShot0072.jpg

I promoted some of our knights in roman territory with combat I and shock to deal with praetorians which they then do very well.

IBT: The missionary on the way to Athens is attacked by one of JC's troups deep in greek territory and killed. Damn.
Engineering also comes in. So what next? Can't really see any consensus so I will have to make a choice. At this level we should probably map out our tech path toghether if we want to be successful. I take banking anyway for the economic reasons and we will have a monopoly on it so it may be worth something in trade to us.

Turn 3 -- 1230AD
Berlin (Sci): Catapult -> Confucian missionary
Isaac Newton (Great Scientist) is born in Hamburg and I subsequently fire the two scientist that bought him about. He will give us Philosophy. Only Qin has this tech for now. Damn him.

Turn 4 -- 1240AD
Beshbalik (Sci): Confucian Monastery -> Courthouse
And Yay! I found Rome straight away. Luckily went in the right direction. But it's on a damned hill. That's going to make it a bit tougher.

Civ4ScreenShot0073.jpg

Turn 5 -- 1250AD
Munich (Prod): Knight -> Courthouse
Whipped courthouse in Hamburg.
Cologne (Hybrid): Maceman -> Buddhist Monastary

The battle for Rome begins with bombarding of the defenses down from 50% to 24% with 4 cats. Bit slow going there. Best odds after this are only 10% so I will have to work on this for a few turns.

Turn 6 -- 1260AD
Berlin (Sci): Confucian Missionary -> Market (mainly for happiness)
Hamburg (Sci): Courthouse -> Confucian Missionary

Battle of Rome: I just realised that I am attacking across the river. :smoke: . I move the army to the forest to the south which will not get this penalty.

IBT: Qin and Lewis both declare on us.

I got to go out now so I will reserve this spot for my next part of the turn reports. I've played on a bit more.

[Edit] See my next post for conclusion.

Greyfox, no I ain't a lawyer and the fine print... I'll make it a bit bigger for ya!

IBT: Qin and Lewis both declare on us.

Can ya read that one?

Yeah, that's right.. both at once and I've been sending all the troops up to finish off JC.

Civ4ScreenShot0075.jpg

Civ4ScreenShot0076.jpg

And to get Alex to declare on Qin, I'd have to trade Guilds.

Civ4ScreenShot0077.jpg

Turn 7 -- 1270AD
So what to do now.. Qin has only sent a measly 3 guys in.. one died in attacking our longbowman and another is mortally wounded from the same longbowman. And there is another HA with him. Not really much preparation gone into his declaration by the look of it.
I change Frankfurt to a Pikeman straight away.

A Maceman from nearby with archer promotion takes on the Horse Archer and looses.. . Luckily I've got another who wins without a scratch so now the only forces of Qin's in our territory are an injured Cho-Ko-Nu. Problem is, he's on our horses and can pillage them next IBT if he so wishes.

Now after that mild heart attack inducing interlude we can go back to the action at Rome. With Qin coming from the other side, I am going to take Rome now and sue for peace until we can be sure that we are defended against Qin.

Two cats bombard the defenses down to 9% and the the other 2 cats suicide into the longbowman fortified in the hill city. One was our super cat and he didn't withdrawal this time. May he RIP.

The best odds after that are 40% for a CR3 maceman. I take the chance and he won! Bloody ripper. Next up was a knight with 76% of it evens up the odds... ie. he lost. But now the odds are all very much in our favour. Three more macemen clean up the stragglers and Rome is ours. I will keep this as it's a capital. We liberate a worker along the way.

Civ4ScreenShot0078.jpg

Now I go and see JC and see what's the best offer he'll give us. He offers us this deal.

Civ4ScreenShot0079.jpg

I don't really want another city right now, particularly as I have no idea what it's like and our economy doesn't need some city with huge maintenance right now. We can take it when we are ready. I change it too Compass, all his gold (10g) and all his gpt (1). A bit low really but I need to be able to deal with Qin first.

Now to concentrate on Qin. Louis is located behind Qin and will be coming at us through Qin and Alex. Qin really hasn't thrown much at as yet which may give us time to get our house in order and some defenses up. I am going to upgrade the warrior in Frankfurt to a Maceman and reduce research to 0 to raise a bit of money to upgrade a few more if necessary. I will the apply the :whipped: to get together a few defenders whilst I wait for the cavalry (knights actually) to arrive.

I will go off and play the rest of my set now. Wish me luck :D .

Here's a save if you want to have a look.

Good luck, Peon! Show them how you have mightily chopped trees and boldy mined golds in the Tide of Darkness!!!!

Rare that an AI is willng to part with his city .... if he is willing to give a city, he is willing give us the tech.

I think Qin is bought into this war ... good job bringing in Alex again ... EDIT: he should be dealing with the full impact of Louis, I think louis share a border with him ... not too sure though. -- just realized you brought him to war with Qin, not Loius :crazyeye: ... too bad he can't be brought to war with both. Qin is the power leader, so bring Alex on Qin is a good idea.

Hammer on! :hammer:

-

Actually Grey, I didn't bring him in as he wanted Guilds and I thought to keep the monopoly but as you will see, he stopped trading with him at our request as his relations with us are quite good. As Qin is fighting us with Knights I think that we probably can afford the trade to get him fighting with Qin. I'll leave it in namliaM's capable mouse hand.

Ok. This is my third session for this turnset. I am glad I didn't play it last night as it's taken me hours. I really am slow at this game and writing it up.

Turn 7 -- 1270AD (cont'd)
I upgraded the warrior to a maceman in Frankfurt. Research is droppe to 0% for a little while to get some gold. It doesn't help much.
I send the city garisson 2 longbow to kill the injured Cho-Ko-Nu. No point letting him get away. Our Longbow wins.
Berlin is changed to a Knight and the granary in Essen is whipped.

Turn 8 -- 1280AD
Cologne: Buddhist Monastery -> Knight
Essen: Granary -> Library (science city)
Hamburg: Conf. Missionary -> Catapult

I dial up Alex and ask him to stop trading with Qin as I notice some of Qin's soldiers are coming at us through Alex. To my shock he says ok at no cost... Great, at least we can rest for a while without him coming at us through Alex.

To keep our friendship and just as thanks for that, I get drunk with him. (Actually, I traded wine for 1gpt). We can cancel this later or renegotiate for more money but we need him as friendly as possible as he is keeping our border with Qin to a minimum.

I open borders with Asoka & trade our silk for his sugar. He won't hear about anything to do with Qin. It's all redded out.

I attack a Knight of Qin's that snuck through Alex before I closed the borders. I have 73% odds and lose without scratching him... . I don't mind that the odds are that I will lose 1 in 4 of those battles but when it doesn't even do any damage, that's frustrating. I send another similar knight at him and he loses again!!!  . At least this time he damaged him down to 3.5/10! I send a third Knight and he cleans him up. Lucky I had so many near by!

I then :whipped: the Knight at Cologne, :whipped: the Pike in Frankfurt and spread confucianism to Turfan.

Qin is still sending bugger all.

IBT: Spoke to soon. Qin sends some Knights to pillage our horses. 2 Knights, 1 War Elephant and 1 Maceman to be precise.

Turn 9 -- 1290AD
Cologne: Knight -> Pikeman
Frankfurt: Pikeman -> Pikeman. I selected these to deal with the fact that Qin is sending in Knights and these are our cheapest protection against them.

Franfurt should be ok for another turn but Qin's got a few more soldiers heading our way now.

I upgrade the warrior in Hamburg to a Pikeman.

I :whipped: the Knight in Berlin and put a Knight in the front of the queue in Munich.

Turn 10 -- 1300AD
Another great scientist is born. We've got 2 of them now, so I use him to learn us Philosophy as we ain't going to be getting it from Qin soon.

Here is the situation at Frankfurt that I am giving to namliaM. Seems to me that we stand a chance but i bet he will sacrifice those two cats without reducing the 60% cultural bonus. If not then it will buy us some time to bring more reinforcements.

Civ4ScreenShot0084.jpg

Post-turn comments
namliaM, take note that I have troops in the North of Qin's land to go at him up there as well. And there is a french warrior above Frankfurt threatening us too  .

Well. That was fun. I hope we can save ourselves from this. We are a bit thin in defense down the south. If we can hold off the first attack from Qin then I hope we should be ok.

As an aside which was important at the time but other pressing things seemed to take precedence, I set Karakorum (GP city) to max food to get it to grow out as fast as possible to support as many specialists as possilbe. I also converted the hills to windmills to make them food neutral.

Here's the save:

Kikinit, great turns. Commoner peon has nothing to envy Arthas for ;)

Nice move to bring the troops at shandong north of china :goodjob:
Let's start to take cities already

Concering Alex, I will send him against Louis XIV. They are neighbours and Louis may decide to take the battle on his close front. I am sure he has some SOD heading toward us and maybe he will change direction then. Let us deal with Qin with our own forces
I have made a test with your second save (1270 AD) and Alex was willing to declare on Louis for guilds and some gold. Now we don't have enough gold. 1 alternative is to keep the slider on 0% until we have enough gold for Alex, but if he is researching guilds we might never catch. The other alternative is to make the GS discover philo and trade it to Alex to declare on Louis (+give us some gold maybe).
Makin Alex declare on Qin won't help as much as a neutralizing war between Alex and Louis far away from our lands

I'd suggest rushing walls at Frankfurt too, +50% defense for all units is better than a pike (should cost 2 pops on turn 2). Hoping he won't pillage too much before forces are there

The other scientist should go to Beshbalik found an academy.
IMO, Anitum should go science and Rome go Prod or Hybrid

@Bede : Seems like AI is deciding for our long term strategy and guiding us towards a dom/conquest game :D . We had 4 AIs declare on us already. We are very popular this game :crazyeye:

I have a letter to Qin that you must deliver for me, postman:

YOU HAVE CHOSEN UNWISELY

Kikinit, good defending, but a bit of bad luck there with some of the battle odds. Did you wash your hand before you play?

Okay, maybe we don't need Alex to fight off Qin ... but you should check Qin's power ... he is number 1 i think.

Not-so-New Roster
