Fox-03 -- Trying to be Special

 ... geez, what was I thinking. I meant the tank tech ... yeah right, tank tech. :D

But again, my point is, we don't have to worry about unhappiness. Just pump up the culture if WW or WWE is a problem, IMHO.

It's okay, Fox. I don't read your reports, either. I think the tank tech is industrialism.

I've got a question. I'm just over halfway through and I've got the Great Scientist from Physics and now I've got three GP's and can trigger a Golden Age. To me, now is the perfect timing with a bucket load of factories being built and other infrastructure. It would really speed it all along and mean the next person can just concentrate on building the army to win the game.

I just wanted to hear someone else give some agreement before I use 3 GP's.

EDIT: And I've just read your posts since my got it and you want me to get them to start at each other now? And we spend 10 turns building an army ready to go at Alex in a much weakenened state?

EDIT2: Alex only wants communism to go to war with Asoka. That's cheap in my book.

I say go ahead with the GA, though I thought we only needed two. Have we had one already? That would be a fantastic time to ramp up factories and power plants.

I would pay Alex to fight Asoka now, if the coin is reasonable. Try not to give too many military techs, if you can help it.

Lastly, the fact that we took the Physics GS is a really good sign. I often see Asoka bee-line straight for it. This means he'll be easy to steam-roll, once Alex takes out/weakens his current forces.

You got my benediction too.
Let them clash and we'll go do the cleaning. Asoka is really mad at us and may decide to make a desperate attack. Just make sure to upgrade the frigates or hide them in cities in case he decides to strike
GA would sure be nice

Played 9 turns to even up the turns. Triggered a GA, built loads of factories and started on a decent army. Oh... and I started a war between Alex and Asoka at no cost to us.

Turn (1) -- 1862AD - I start at 1 as blid played my turn 0 for me ;)
Let's see if I've learnt anything from this city specialisation gig.
Rheims shown below --> I'll make it production. Seems to be a good number of hammers.

Orleans is a toughie... If we were starting from scratch, I'd say science/finance with those floodplains but it's a bit late to build cottages so I'll pick production and build an army!

ded768ea.jpg

Oh hang on.. it's got the temple of solomon. I recall rex building that. We must have had this for a while. What's the designation? I can't be bothered reading back and it is building a bank so I'll guess blid made it financial to make the most of the shrine.

Turn (2) -- 1864AD - Combustion is finished.
Berlin: Infantry -> Factory (in 9)
Cologne: Factory -> Coal Plant (in 2)
Tours: Cannon -> Granary (in 4)

Alex can research physics too so I go for that first to try and get the free scientist.

Turn (3) -- 1866AD
Macau: Factory -> Coal Plant (in 4)

Rabbi Akiva (Great Prophet) is born in Shanghai. WTH to do with him? Save him for a GA or the buddhist shrine in Paris that Alex hasn't bothered to build yet? Oh crap forget that, we've got another Prophet in our capital so I merge him as a superspecialist in Ghuangzhou to help speed up Wall Street and the 5gpt will become 15gpt with Wall street, bank, market and grocer.

Turn (4) -- 1868AD
Cologne: Coal Plant -> Aqueduct (in 2)
Shanghai: Library -> Factory (in 11)
Lyons: Barracks -> Courthouse (in 7)

Turn (5) -- 1870AD
Beshbalik: Cannon -> Barracks (no barracks + bldg cannons!)
Beijing: Market -> Factory (in 10)
Tours: Granary -> Factory (in 14)

Turn (6) -- 1872AD - Physics is learned and we're first there.
Munich: Factory -> Coal Plant (in 4)
Cologne: Aqueduct -> Destroyer (in 2)
Frankfurt: University -> Factory (in 11)
Turfan: Library -> Factory (in 11)
Neapolis: Granary -> Courthouse (in 12) - 18 Maintenance!
Wissensee: Granary -> Courthouse (in 17)

I chose democracy next for emancipation.

The scientist is in the capital. I think a GA now is as good a time as any for it. At this stage I went to the forum to ask if we should go for a GA.

Well... at least I got one answer and I think the timing is just right with a huge building rush going on and probably our last one for this game. So I fire of a Golden Age with our 3 GP's.

I also believe that this is the time to get Alex to declare on Asoka. In about 10 turns we will be ready to attack him with Artillery and Infantry. He only has cannons and riflemen and cavalry at the moment although he has a fair number of them. I dial up Alex and select go to war with Alex. Just for fun I click 'Can you spare this for a friend' and lo and behold, he agrees!!! :crazyeye: . That's cheaper than I expected :D .

c794d498.jpg

I sent about 4-5 cavalry up to the border between Alex and Asoka to see what's going on.

Turn (7) -- 1874AD
Hamburg: Factory -> Coal Plant (in 3)
Cologne: Destroyer -> Destroyer (in 2)
Rome: Uni -> Colosseum (in 3) - To allow us to continue producing GP's during the war.
Macau: Coal Plant -> Infantry (in 2)
Rheims: Granary -> Barracks (in 5)

Turn (8) -- 1876AD
Beshbalik: Barracks -> Factory (in 10)
Antium: Forbidden Palace -> Factory (in 11)
Research to 70% now with FP + GA combined. Won't be sustainable after the GA though.

Turn (9) -- 1878AD - Democracy is in.
Berlin: Factory -> Coal Plant (in 3)
Munich: Coal Plant -> Infantry (in 1)
Cologne: Destroyer -> Destroyer (in 2)
Macau: Infantry -> Infantry (in 2)
Dusseldorf: Infantry -> Factory (in 13)
Nanjing: Library -> Uni (in 6)

I contemplate switching to Emancipation but decide it's best not to have 2 turns of anarchy in the midst of a GA. Next up can do it before we go to war and after the GA has finished.

I choose Artillery next as it will be quite useful against Alex's cities with high defensive bonuses.

Turn (10) -- 1880AD
Hamburg: Coal Plant -> Infantry (in 1) Aqueduct (in 1)
Munich: Infantry -> Infantry (in 1)
Rome: Colosseum -> Bank (in 10)
Lyons: Courthouse -> Factory (in 9)

4 turns of GA left.
2 turns to Artillery.

Alex hasn't taken any cities yet! He's had a few stacks go in but I don't think he had enough cannons with them as they haven't done much yet. Alex's cities have a lot of riflemen in them. We'll need a fair few artillery support to make the battles work in our favour.

And here's our manufacturing output showing the effect of the GA and all the factories I built. We are a powerhouse now.

Nice turn, and :goodjob: getting the war for free ...

But are you sure Confusious say something like that? I used to study Confucious (very very long time ago ... ), albeit in Chinese, but I don't recall that ...

Didn't we also have the Versalles (captured from someone, I think)? Does the Versalles continue to have its effect of acting as a palace after we captured it?

@namliaM: I hope you are not serious abt your self-imposed no-Civ4 punishment ;)

I don't know if Confucious said that. I read it from a quote website and they attributed it to Confucious and I took there word for it. I guess I can put it as my quote :p .

 for the free war. And well thought sending those cavs to check the war field

Sorry about Orelans, forgot to give a designation

@Grey : 2AM and if you check the different screenshots, you will see how slow I am when playing and reporting at the same time :) . I haven't even opened the autolog this time

Who is talking about no-civ4 punishment ? This is against human rights. I object

I just read all of our post for the last four pages (oh the tedium!). Where does namliaM say anything about putting down Civ during the week?

Got it. On for tonight

GreyFox said:
 ... you read 4pages of posts just for that? No, its not in this thread.

Well, if you dare, you are welcome read the VQ thread in SGOTM to know why namliam self-imposed the punishment ...

Hahaha.... Wow, well yeah... I am keeping myself to that... and for good reason me thinks... :whipped:

After ending the golden age and enduring three turns of anarchy to put the government on a war footing....we are at war with Alex. Paris and Lahore taken, getting ready to assault Bombay and Delphi. No serious counterattacks from the Greek, two cannon and two horse soldiers. Bombay will be a tough nut as somewhere along in there Alex learned how to train Machine Gunners and has done so.

I really wanted to get to Flight before pulling the trigger (and we should have done that rather than tube cannon) but hey, we had these troops sitting around eating their little heads off while Alex's gang was all tied up in the Far East.

Newsreel pictures and save to come.

The plan is a simple one: drive a wedge betweeen Alex's army group east and his home base cities in the west. With Bombay in our hands we will be astride his east west axis, preventing him from moving his troops to reinforce the homeland or the battle group in India. So far he is cooperating. Once Bombay is ours we can roll over the western cities pretty comfortably.

I am going to regret this later

Get lots of cash for ship upgrades but his eventual conversion to Emancipation is going to cause some problems down the line. So out comes the whip and the draft board.

Turn 310 (1880 AD)
Lots of frigate promotions and some upgrades to the navy. The fleet off the east coast gets redeployed for
GreekWatch in the eastern waters. while the ships in the west start an end around to the Greek shores.

Much time spent staring down from on high trying to plan a Greek invasion. And some cavalry are dispatched on recon missions into Greek territory.

IBT:

Turn 311 (1882 AD)
There are health and happiness to be covered in some places. Grocers and acqueducts are ordered to deal with factory effects; I start shifting some troops to the west to provide cover against any Greek incursions once the war starts. And I start theatres in towns that don't have them.

IBT:

Turn 312 (1884 AD)

Lining up the troops for the first assault into Greece and protection for the western towns. The bulk of his forces are in the far east so the plan calls for splitting them away from home by making a drive through Paris to Bombay and Lahore, then attacking into his homeland by way of Delphi in the west.

IBT:

Turn 313 (1886 AD)
The Golden Age ends so next turn I revolt to war time civcs. Should have taken Emancipation but I want the whip in hand to deal with war weariness and native populations.

IBT:

Turn 314 (1888 AD)
Put Lenin on the train and adopt the war civics of Police State, Nationhood, and Free Religion. Three turns of anarchy.

IBT:

Turn 315 (1890 AD)

Turn 316 (1892 AD)

Turn 317 (1894 AD)

Paris is a piece of cake though I lose two costly to upgrade grenadiers.

1894_0001.jpg

But I can finish the job with cannon to earn some promotions

1894_0002.jpg

First objective secured and the survivors draw some promotions.

Kill a Greek grenadier on the road to Lahore

The defense at Bombay

1894_0004.jpg

And at Lahore

1894_0003.jpg

What I want to do here is put the heaviest pressure in the east and draw Alexander's forces into the open between Paris and Lahore and Bombay. He is not strong enough in the west to cause much harm so I want to draw him out by turtling in the border towns and picking his troops off as they emerge. Moving against both Bombay from Paris and Lahore from Lyons will surely give him pause. Now let's see what he offers as a counter

IBT:
While defending the stack, Infantry defeats (14.40/20): Greek Cannon from Lahore and the picquet cavalry at Lahore is lost but takes a Greek with him and the rifle is so badly wounded he moves off the hill into town and is not replaced.
While defending, Cavalry defeats (11.85/15): Greek Cavalry
While defending, Cavalry loses to: Greek Rifleman (1.40/14)

Turn 318 (1896 AD)
Nothing happens in the west while he burned up a cavalryman taking a piquet cavalry off the hill in front of Lahore but then fails to hold it. And wastes a cannon by attacking the stack on the way to Lahore but its size means he accomplishes little. There are enough healthy attackers left to do some serious damage when they get there.

Move the troops into position at Lahore and across the treed hills to Bombay

He also parks a cannon in front of Lyons as cavalry bait I guess. It dies
While attacking, Cavalry defeats (8.25/15): Greek Cannon

Then he attacks in the west at Turfan with another lonely cannon.
While defending, Machine Gun defeats (15.84/18): Greek Cannon

Turn 319 (1898 AD)
Alex has sent two cavalrymen to threaten Lyons. And a Groundpounder is lost taking them out.

And Lahore takes a pounding from the cannon

IBT:
Alex is using his cavalry up killing horse soldiers on picquet duty.
While defending, Cavalry loses to: Greek Cavalry (15.00/15)

Turn 320 (1900 AD)

Alex sends some raiders into the Turfan salient
While attacking, Infantry defeats (2.00/20): Greek Cavalry
While attacking, Infantry defeats (9.20/20): Greek Cavalry

And a green draftee from Turfan kills the last lonely Greek raider.
While attacking, Infantry defeats (12.80/20): Greek Cavalry

1900_0000.jpg

After bombardment at Lahore the walls are down and the assault begins.
While attacking, Cannon loses to: Greek Rifleman (10.08/14)
While attacking, Infantry defeats (16.20/20): Greek Rifleman
Lahore is going down
While attacking, Infantry loses to: Greek Rifleman (0.84/14)
While attacking, Infantry defeats (8.60/20): Greek Rifleman
While attacking, Cannon defeats (7.68/12): Greek Cavalry
While attacking, Cannon defeats (12.00/12): Greek Rifleman

And that's all she wrote for Lahore.

The Gathering Storm

1900_0004.jpg

Artillery support for the Holcomb force and it is good to go against Delphi.

There is a small fleet keeping an eye on Sparta and lobbing shells at the walls every so often

Alex is building a couple of cavalry every other turn or so and sending them out to harass us in the Turfan area. The strongest threat from him will come in the northwest as our towns up there are at best weakly defended but it seems that a couple of infantry are more than enough to deter him. Use the draft if you need to bulk up the forces there.

Good use of drafting, Brother Bede. I have to admit, I don't use the draft nearly as much as I should. I guess I never know when it's worth it to do so. Any advice on the subject?

Also, what's Asoka's status? Is he at war with either us or Greece?
