Free 3d program: Blender

Yeah there is no undo. Just a warning When hitting the delete button in edit mode NEVER hit all (unless you want the entire object to disappear)

There isn't? :p

Hm.... spacebar and then U huh? Oh even better, just U will work.

Can't wait can't wait can't wait to get my new computer!

I read somewhere in one of the tutorials there wasn't.... my bad. And that's good too.

SO civ 4 is going to be using totaly 3D graphics then? Guess I'll have to get a new PC too. What are the effects like in blender? any good explosions and such?

If you fancy making any space ships while testing out this new program that would be wunderbar!

If you visit their website you'll see the power of blender.

Actually I am working on an armed stardock for my mod..... but I am trying to make, and learn it, in Open FX, so the going is slow.

I just downloaded this program (and I'm a new unit creator btw), and I was wondering if anyone here has submitted community base models for a human unit based on his creation library?

I have many units I want to make, but I'm quite the newb when it comes to making initial creation. If not, is there an online database on their homepage or fanpages?

Well.... there are .dxf models of humans floating arund soemwhere like renderosity.com or bahkter.com, and blender can use dxf''s, but I am not sure if there are any .blend models of humans out. There could be, I just have not taken the time to look yet because of two things,

1. I prefer now to make all of my own models
2. I can't use blender yet at home, and have only spent about 4 hours looking aroud online at the forums, fan sites etc. for blender.

I would advise that if you are planning to just start, don't get discouraged, but expect not to be able to start creating your first unit in Blender for 2 or 3 weeks! It appears to me to be quite complicated, and you probably still have not even learned the ins and outs of FLICster.

I was able to create a unit in Rhino in about 4 days, via frame by frame animation, which was great compared to the 2 months it took for me to make my first unit, which I did by cut and paste and pixel by pixel drawing.

Has anyone found the correct camera locations for civ yet? Im making the model for my first unit now (its taking awhille) and was wondering if anyone has found them so i wont.

That will have to be trial and error.

When I was doing it for Rhino to set up my starting template, I found the armor storyboard to be a good comparison, as it is long and boxy, and gives a good view of the angles.

I think i found the camaras for the 8 civ angles. Note: There is an area where nothing can be so i put pink walls to surround the area preventing black spots on the rendered thing. You can change the lighting how ever you want. To change camaras Select the camara you want to "look through" and hit Ctrl-Num0.

Oh and the circle and the plane at the top helped me guide the camera locations. delete them or leave them its up to you.

Enjoy!

Cool, I'll take a look at it during my lunch. :)

I decide dduring lunch today instead of reading the next tutorial, I would go ahead and try makeing something. Blender takes a getting used to it's rythm. I pressed "A" (select/deselect all) and then "B" (w/ LM select vertices) alot.

An introduction tutorial said it was built for heavy keyboard and mouse use.

All in all, I got a pretty wicked Mech leg fashioned, so next week at work, (or home if I get my new Computer) I'll be working on it. Pretty easy once you get used to it. (and more fluid for my taste than Open FX, which I have been using for about 10 - 15 hours now, compared to only 4 or 5 on Blender)

@Neomega- I dont really know why you need a new computer. Im running a P2 450mHz with a "Rage Fury Pro" (its some old video card) and it works just fine except for the especially long renders when using the Particle effect.

Also i niffty little thing with all kinds of questions and answers:

My current computer has SiS aka onboard video, which on the Blender webstie said "would perform poorly" and it does. This motherboard does not have an AGP slot, therefore....

Also, It's about time to get a new computer... It has been over 2 years. Might as well get one built for all I'm gonna do... animate and create. :)

Vbraun: how are you converting your animations to aniggifs? ANd how have you transferred them to FLICster? I am having a hell of a time figuring it out....

vbraun: Thanks for the links. I downloaded Blender over a year ago, but never used it, since it has one of the most byzantine and least user-friendly interface of any program I've ever seen (MS-DOS included). I couldn't even create one lousy primative with it. :( Now that I know where to get some help using this, I might take a whack at doing some models with it.

It is difficult, and has 100 buttons on every panel... but it is so powerful. There are lots of tutorials, I would suggest first read the ones on the Blender webpage.

I did the sensible thing and invested my money instead of getting a new computer... I'll have to wait until next month... :( or come to work on my days off.
