As a recent convert to the pessimist club, I just wanted to throw this out more visibly.

What if pit boss is completed, but they are going to wait a couple of months until everyone has purchased the game before we find out that it is going to be a $19.99/month charge to use the pitboss service.

I'd also like to give Soren or anyone a chance to tell me this isn't true.

I don't think we'll be seeing Soren around here any time soon. ;)

if they can run battle.net for free...i dont see why in hell they couldnt do pit boss for free either...if it was an online game like everquest of dark age of camalot i would understand..but come on.

It wouldn't surprice me now that you say it, probably a bit cheaper though.

Didn't someone just throwout the question of a future MMO within the civfranchise? This would be an easy way to start... to see how many that are interested in paying a monthly fee for civ.

I'm not sure that my PC can run Civ4 so I have no problem waiting with my purchase until I get a better PC, even more now when they're delaying features. I remember this happening in civ3 too.

Perhaps I will get civ4 in the spring or next summer. By then we all now how the game turned out and how good the support is.

This forum is getting out of hand...seriously!
Maybe it is, but after all of my fighting the pessimism, it kind of bummed me out the way that they took these steps:
0) Previews previews previews, the new pitboss!
1) Announce early release
2) Push for pre-order, including bonus material, etc.
3) Put up more screen shots
4) More reviews, more previews
5) Publicize bonus pre-order, give more videos and interviews
.
.
10) By the way, pit boss will be 2 months later
:(

What if? You're pulling that out of your arse, what reason could you have to assume that this is the case? Sure, it's coming out late, how is that any indication that you'll have to pay for it?

I'm saying that based on the evolution of circumstances, I wouldn't be surprised, at this point, of that tactic.

Your assumption that they are going to use that tactic is based on a logical fallacy. Why should Soren deny that it is going to happen? It makes far more sense, since there is no evidence to support the idea that it is going to happen, to assume that it isn't.

The falacy is your creation.

I'm not basing the idea on the fact that someone isn't denying it.

That's just a seperate hope.

Also I wouldn't be surprised if reliogion doesn't come until an expansion pack in April.

IMHO.. I find that most PC games follow a similar route.

Hey you make it sounds like $20/month is the confirmed cost of pitboss in the title. it's very misleading. shouldn't you change it back to something that indicates that it's your own speculation?

That's ridiculous. I'll bet you those $20 that you're wrong. $20/month is $240/year. After paying $50-$60 for the game, that's $300 just in the first year. It's most likely that it will be free (as it should), but if it costs money, I doubt it will be more than $5/month. If it does cost money, they should distribute the server software so that people can run their own servers. If you can only use the one official pit boss server, it should be free.

I think Pitboss is a program you'll be able to run on your own machines and host your own games. I can't imagine Firaxis would want to deal with the all potential issues from running a hosting service....

Uh, no. There are exactly zero other non-MMO games that require you to pay for servers, and even MMOs cost less than $20/mo. Seriously, quit the ignorant paranoia already.

The new Gamespot article implied that (though they got some other things wrong, so I wouldn't call it certain).
