For those who dont know, Free Willy is a famous movie about a boy and a killer whale. The whale's actual name is Keiko.

I felt we need some lighthearted news today, even if it is of a sad sort. I only think they used the same whale for the first few anyway.

It's a pity. I remember how much energy it took to, well, literally free him and get him into the ocean.

The avg. life span of an Orca is 35 yrs, and he died of pnuemonia at 27 yrs...Something makes me wonder: Shouldn't they live longer in captivity?

Some killer whales in captivity are believed to have died of sheer boredom. Anyone seen "The Count of Monte Cristo?" There was a man, stuck in an unfurnished stone cell for years. Somehow, he didn't go insane. If orcas are nearly as smart as we are, how cruel must it be to keep them in a featureless tank?

As long as they stay in captivity that would make since, but it also makes them weaker in the wild since they are use to being given food.

Oops.. I've been away for the weekend and mixed the days up

Keiko has in fact been quite a celebrity in Norway in the last year, seing as he decided to live here (even though we kill whales).

I think that means Norway should go through ayear of mourning for Keiko, where no whales are killed

really though, its sad that after they relesed him, all he did was swim for the nearest friendlly humans... seems to me liek he would have just been better off being kept in sea world... mabey he was to trained to be around people- or mabey he, and killer whales as a whole are just smart enough to really enjoy human comapny...
