I wasn't sure where to start this thread, but as it's most like Civ 2, I thought here would be good.

Anyone played this:

http://www.freeciv.org/index.php/Freeciv and what did you think?

Personally I don't really like it, the civs have little AI, and have this annoying tendency to send their settlers to build right on top of you

I tried that a few years ago and was also not impressed. They made some changes to the historic CivII play, and though they designed it for improved AI I did not feel it was very good. Perhaps there are alternative AI patches now.

FreeCiv is a valiant effort, but the AI is, and has always been, its weakest part. They had one semi-competent AI programmer in the beginning, who wrote lots of totally unintelligible, uncommented, but mostly working code, and then vanished. Since no one understands his code, any improvement would have to rewrite the whole AI from scratch, which seems to be beyond the scope of the FreeCiv team. (Caveat: I haven't checked the news for quite a while, so my information may be outdated.)

For me, the moddability of Civ3 and Civ4 obsoleted FreeCiv before it could take off further. From time to time I download new versions, but I always find myself playing another game of Civ4 instead of installing them.
