Hi guys,

just curious if anyone has played FREELANCER and liked it? is there anything similar or better to it?

I'm looking for an open ended game. Thanks for your ideas.

Cheers

Yep, I liked it. Its not terribly open-ended until you finish the game. Once you do though, you can do what you like, and go where you like, instead of being constrained by the story.

I don't like this game. It is nearly linear, and the freedom is greatly limited.

X-Tension have been much better. I don't speak about Elite.

The way to move with the ship was very disappointing to me. For the rest I like this game type very much. I used to be a fan of Privateer I & II. This could've been a good successor.

But perhaps I just didn't setup the settings correctly. The mouse is for aiming, right? Then how do you control the ship? I have a joystick, but wasn't able to get it to work. :undecide:

Freelancer sucks. Space Rangers is much better

Freelancer doesn't suck :)

The mouse is meant to be used for movement as well as shooting. So basically you are meant to use the mouse and keyboard rather than having to buy a joystick that just wastes a load of space.

Thanks for the replies guys. I downloaded the trial but there must have been something seriously wrong (conflicts) because the game would flicker, the letters on buttons weren't there....etc.

Anyway, has anyone heard of this new game Peter Molyneux is working on that is based on the life of a young boy that you take through adventures (and he grows up and develops powers, etc. depending on what he does)?

It is supposed to be open ended gaming as well.

TIA

I just found the Molyneux game I mentioned. Its called Fable and it won't be out until early 2004 (reality says mid to late 2004).

The other game he's working on is B.C. where you teach and guide a small group of cavemen.

I guess we'll have to wait for these quality games. Everything I read tells me they will both be simply amazing.

Click and hold the left mouse button and instead of moving the cursor around it turns the spaceship. The system sucks at first but once you get used to it you will love it (I do).

I know it works that way, PaleHorse76, but then it's impossible to aim to shoot and move your ship at the same time.

With Unreal Tournament I also don't shoot only when I'm standing still. Neither do I with Privateer (II).

Hold the left and right mouse buttons down to move and shoot! :) I was doing well in the game until I broke my computer.
I like the weapons with fast firing rates and low power consumption. Also, buy some of the shield killing missiles, Erasers I believe, they work great on getting rid of shields in one shot. Just hit (4) to launch them, at least for my set up.

Also, (a) and (d) are used for straffing, or you can setup the left and right arrow keys. (w) accelerates and (s) or (x), can't remember which, throws on the brakes.

Perhaps I should clarify: I'd like to be able to move in one direction and aim (and shoot) to another.

Ah, I get you now - you can when you get turrets later in the game when you buy ships that can handle them.

FreeLancer was rather bad. I'd been waiting for this game for 3-4 years, frequently downloading trailers packed with interesting and promising stuff. Nothing of that made it to the game. Overall, it's very flat (and I'm not just talking about the playfield). Ships everywhere, but if you look closer, they're going nowhere. All missions are go there kill that.

Nice graphics, least thing you could expect after that many years in development.

But the really bad thing was the storyline. After watching trailers, I had hoped for some interesting conflicts between huge corporations, taking missions for the highest bidder. Instead you get this Hollywood-ish Evil Aliens concept. The script is littered with "protect what we have fought so long for" and "fight to preserve peace and democracy" clichés. Of course the ending makes sure there'll be another game.
All in all, the storyline is more or less cloned from the brilliant Privateer. Except that that guy could respond to insults more intelligently than "uh" and "oh yeah?". Trent looks like a sheep, though the domestic animal could beat him in any conversation competition.

They promised dynamic economy.
They promised that the player's actions would affect the game.
Nothing of it went through. In the end, FL is just a very flat space shoot-em-up with nothing special.

Forgive me for this ranting, but I was very hopeful those 4 years.

I liked Freelancer. Not a great game, but certainly an enjoyable one.

So, not a 'must buy' game, more of a 'try it, you might like it' game.
