I agree with Thadlerian also but I am just enjoying the game for the space combat....I am sure that if I had been following the development of this game like you did that I would be disappointed also - Like I was for Civ3.
Freelancer got on my nerves pretty quickly and I stopped playing...
I blame the tedious "we aren't in charge of this spacestation BLAH but we have good relations with those who are" nonsense. The Universe portrayed just didn't inspire me one iota and I have to say I hated the camera position for the ships...I want to be inside my spaceship cockpit, snug and warm and at the controls from which I deal out death.
Freelancer does have a pretty pathetic single player campaign and universe, and it gets dull after the story.
However, Freelancer is an excellent multiplayer game (counting out pkers and lamer clans) . You have to admit, smuggling Cardamine (narcotics) to Planet Manhattan in a small fleet with your friends has got to be pretty fun .

Or, using another of those clichés:
"We don't run CFC, but we have an understanding with the people who do."
As for the multiplayer part, it doesn't seem to work for me. I get out there all right, but even the slightest ping makes AI ships rock back and forth, making them impossible to hit.
And I never ever get any contact with the other people playing. Nobody answer my "greetings" or "any team I can join", they all seem to be completely occupied with themselves.
Multiplayer performance is dependant (obviously) on the server, the number of participants, and your own connection. Having a dialup connection, I can tell you first hand it is quite akward taking on anything more than flying and docking.
As for contacting others, it seriously depends on who you know and again, the server you visit.
