Freeze with working buttons

I recently bought the Civ 4: Complete edition upon the recommendation of a friend. I'm a fan of strategy games. I've been playing the game a while at his home so I have some experience, and been playing FreeCiv so I know my way around. I installed them all Civ4 first then Warlords then BTS.

Then I started the game (BTS) then everything seems to run OK. I clicked play now to start a game. Then as the game starts and I start to play. About 15 turns into the game the screen freezes but the buttons still animate to be clicked but they do not work. I tried to CTRL-ALT-DEL and WIN-key out of the game but it also doesn't work. Then, if I click quickly, the mouse cursor also freezes. Also, the sound seems to loop then stop.
I waited for about 5 minutes and had to reboot, for at least 5 more times before giving up. I tried to find some solutions around but I'm not familiar how Civ 4 works.

Playing at 1024x768

multiple problems in the dxdiag:
1) directX has a corrupted install: install it again: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...38-db71-4c1b-bc6a-9b6652cd92a3&DisplayLang=en
2) Windows is not updated - do so
3) your graphics driver is - try updating that

I guess the problem is DirectX though

I think I just do that...

I haven't seen that problem since I installed Civ4..

I did what ori told me what to update:
XP SP3
Updated Nvidia drivers
Dx9 runtimes

The game still freezes on me...

What should I do?

is there any error message in the windows event manager after it freezes?
