I'm aware that freights can speed up the construction of SS parts but are they sent to cities building a part or sent, as per normal, to a city that demands the commodity?

TIA :p

Delivering trade goods freights to demanded cities to create trade routes will help you build the spaceship by giving gold which can be spent to rush build the SS part at a rate of 4 gold/sheild.

However, what people usually refer to is the fact that any freight (food or goods) can be used to "help build wonder" and the full 50 shields are applied to the wonder. You can set production to a wonder, add the frieght(s) and then you can switch to a spaceship part with no shield penalty. The game puts the spaceship parts in the same category as the wonders so you can switch between the two without the normal 50% penalty for switching.

Putting the caravans into the wonder gives you 50 shields. Since wonder/spaceship sheilds cost 4g/s to buy, if you think you'll get more than 200g (50s x 4g/s) by delivering the freight, then you are probably better off delivering the goods and using the gold to rush buy the sheilds (plus you get the science bonus as well). If the delivery payment will be under 200g, or if all you could create were food caravans, then you should just build the 50 sheilds into the wonder/space ship.

That's how Manhattan Project is useful without building it:)

If you intend to buy the parts of the spaceship, it's cheaper to buy freights and help a wonder than buying the shields for SS part directly.
Buying 50s on spaceship:
50s x 4g/s = 200g

Buying caravan (from scratch) and help wonder:
10s x 2.5g/s x 2 = 50
10 x 2.5g/s = 25
10 x 2.5g/s = 25
10 x 2.5g/s = 25
10 x 2.5g/s = 25
50 +25 +25 +25 +25 =150g

If you have money and want to buy your SS parts it's cheaper to buy all the caravans you need for 150g each than buying the SS part directly.:)

Yeah, if you don't somehow seed the production box it's 210g to get the first 30s, plus 50g for the last 20 shields for a total of 260g.

Of course there are factors that can change that - if you can seed the production box, the 210g goes down dramatically as you avoid the 2x penalty and don't have to buy those first sheilds at 5g each. If you produce 10 or more shields in the city, you don't have to buy the last row of shields, saving 25g, etc.

Another thing to consider is that the costs for the SS parts (80, 160, 320) are not evenly divisible by 50, so you need to either buy some of the shields, wait for the city to produce them, or waste some of the sheilds from the frieghts by going over.

They don't call this Civfanatics for no reason do they! I never thought that the game could get that deep. I have learnt more about caravans in the past 20 mins than I have since first owning the game!

Thanks folks! That really helps. The last time I sent a caravan to a SS part-building city, the options screen didn't list "Help build wonder/SS part." Should it have? Is there a patch I'm missing?

Oops... forgot about buying the improvement first.

You have to change your production to a real wonder (yet another reason NOT to build Manhattan Project! ;) ), dump the caravans into the Wonder, then don't forget to switch production to the SS part when you're done! The important point is that you can switch between the wonder and the SS part with no penalty.

Okay, Ithink my last questions were redundant. My conclusion is that you should have a wonder in production (not for completing but to switch to SS parts repeatedly). Use this system but send the odd freight to a demand city if youthink you can get 200g for purchase of an SS part. Have I got the basics?

Ouch... forgot about that:blush:
Hopefully, the civ is so superior that you can afford to sacrifice some RM or other old units to get the first shields.
