Frigates...unbelievable

Nope! Two is the limit. That is the trade off for using a warship, as opposed to a merchant ship (galleon) to carry camels and troops. The galleon can carry 4 units.

Well, if I recall correctly, four units and a leader. But I wouldn't call it a cheat. Just an application of the same rationale as given by Ace ... it's lot harder to sink a warship Frigate than a transport Galleon, but four units instead of two does reflect the progression in transport capacity from Map Making to Magnetism.

Perhaps it's a good thing that Barbarians don't use Transports. ...

Yah...that's what I saw: a barbarian frigate with 4 crusadors and 1 leader. Perhaps the leader doesn't count as a unit? Too bad they don't use transports...imagine the challenge, especially if you were bored and had no one to go to war with. On the other hand, if you were rather stressed in a war, I guess you wouldn't want this extra challenge.

FOUR UNITS? I play CivII - with the original CD, box and book! - with C Greene's patch for FW/Gold. I have never had more than three units in a galleon.

So, is this for ToT or some other CivII modification?

If I recall correctly, the number of barbs per vessel is also a function of the date -- if the tech is slow, then even barbarian triremes might get by with an extra body (maybe the eager beavers hide in the rigging.)

Barb ships can hold more units. That is the important thing. It would lack challange if the barbs could only land two units, wouldn't it?

All true, and I am fine with barbs carrying extras - and the leader not counting as a unit. Still, my original CivII looks like this:

Trireme, Nav, 2, 3.,0, 1a,1d, 1h,1f, 4,2, 4, Map, 000000000100000
Caravel, Mag, 2, 3.,0, 2a,1d, 1h,1f, 4,3, 4, Nav, 000000000000000
Galleon, Ind, 2, 4.,0, 0a,2d, 2h,1f, 4,4, 4, Mag, 000000000000000
Frigate, E1, 2, 4.,0, 4a,2d, 2h,1f, 5,2, 2, Mag, 000000000000000

Which is correct - the fourth column from the right has the "holds" value: 2 for Trireme, 3 for Caravel, 4 for Galleon and 2 for Frigate.

:)
I am laughing at myself........it IS is correct! I guess I've always gone so fast from Nav to Ind that I've never noticed that galleons can carry four units.

Which reminds me - another reason I never build frigates is they don't automatically upgrade to ironclads when I have Leo's. :(

Frigates count as a military unit, causing unhappiness when away from home (in Republic & Democracy, the government I'm usually in at that brief moment in time), so I have yet to build them.

However, I have purchased them from barbs, and sometimes have collected a NONE boat for use. in those instances, I've often taken a dip along as a captain, and sailed away...to buy more barbs! :scan:

Actually having a frigate offers another feature -- the boat can shoot down the leader & capture the reward.:sniper:
