Dear members of CfC,
I'm no expert in Civ2, but a quite good player. I play deity - in all my games I want to reach AC.
And I always want to win with the full spaceship(39/8/8/4/4/4 - 11.7 years with fusion power) to maximize my score.
Sometimes I must go to the stars with an incomplete space ship.
But I never want to rule the world ...
I prefer building carvans than cannons.
How about you?:egypt: :egypt: :egypt:

Normally, I just wipe the enemy out. In GOTMs, I usually build a SS because of the score factor. In regular private games, I don't build SSs very often. In fact, I normally don't finish most games unless the AI is competitive in late game, which it rarely is (unless given extra help).

So world conquest would be my overall answer. :)

spacehip for me!

Can't be bothered with conquest - too many units to control!

i like conquering the world, spaceship is too easy

I haven't conquered the world in a serious game for absolutely ages. I always finish games by SS, but I like to play "quickie" conquest games on Chieftain, 3 civs, village only, restarts on (no other option on PS :() and try to do it as quickly as possible. I soon realised that to do this as fast as possible means that you have to wait until the AI are crushed and then take both civs' cities on the same turn or else they'll respawn elsewhere.
Haven't done this in a while though but maybe we could have a little competition on the site. :) Obviously I can't post a save of my PS games, but I'll be telling the truth and hope that everyone else will too. Obviously these have to be random maps, because it would be far too easy otherwise. What does anyone think?

I have always played to build SS. This is one of my stumbling blocks in multiplayer. I need to learn the "war monger" strategies. I have always avoided war as much as possible when playing the AI. Still fairly new at higher level of difficulty games. But that is what makes the game great....you actually have to use your brain!!....LOL.

The only games I won by conquest were on small maps, where all civs fight each other...
I normally win with the spaceship (39/8/8/4/4/4 + fusion), because :
1- you earn 400 points (instead of 100 by conquest);)
2- I find it bothering to build armies and ship them to the battlefield (takes time for transportation, causes unhappiness in the cities, and since I play in Democracy when I'm about to enter an enemy city a cease fire is signed without my approval !)
3- and, to increase the score, I wait until the very last moment before launching her (at the end of the game, that means a lot of F12 strikes to check the AI progress...)
The reason is that the higher the population the higher the score.:goodjob:

I like to do both, seperately and at the same time. I know you cannot win by both at the same time but you can play that way. What I mean is that you set out for world conquest, when it becomes a forgone conclusion then start building the maxSS. Keep destroying the Ai until there is only one city left, poison its water supply down to a size 1, then keep it that way, finish your ship, launch, and make as many points from population expansion as possible in the time left.

I thought you could, I always get so bored when I'm the only civ left but one city and I'm waiting for my ship to arrive, so I've never done that.

Wipe them out, all of them. I make it my goal to seek out and eliminate dangerous civs. I will start limited wars or total wars to reduce my competitors. Usurp their power and impede their progress, if they are still alive, they will never be a threat to me because they will be small, poor, undeveloped, no room to expand, or extinct. I try to keep a pet city and build a spaceship but the waiting is so long and tortourous.

I was told long ago when I hadn't been at CFC for very long that it is indeed possible to win by both means, but I've never done it and bear in mind that if you've managed to build a spaceship then your conquest bonus is going to be negligible.
Basically all you have to do is to conquer the last city on the turn before your spaceship is due to land. The announcement that you have conquered the world comes at the end of the turn, as does the video for your SS arrival. Apparently you'll get the points for both but as I say, I've never tried it and wouldn't bother in case my SS points didn't count.

Comparison games are an excellent waste of time! :D We had a rash of them at Apolyton earlier this year, and it was enjoyed by all. We had some random starts and some scenarios. Good fun!

On topic, in my early civ days, I liked to win by spaceship. Then I bought MGE. The AI sneak attacked me so often, I ended up conquering the world no matter what my initial goal was. (Can't let a sneak attack go unpunished, after all. ;) ) I noticed that scores by total conquest were always higher than a spaceship landing.

These days I prefer to just play aggressively - conquest ends up being the end of the game. I haven't even seen rocketry in a game for so long, going to AC just never comes up as an option. I still like the peaceful approach to civ, but the AI insists that it needs beating.

My answer is 90% correlated with Starlifter -- I usually don’t finish. I’m still wrapped around an axle regarding the early game -- so I have many starts and often restarts to explore the different possibilities. I usually play up to Industrialization or so, and just like chess, have little desire to finish out an otherwise won game. For example, looking forward to this GOTM, I started a “similar” situation -- Emperor, 7 civs, Normal sized map; (my start had two settlers & only one tech.) I then gave myself a wonder & played it through to 1 AD. I then repeated the same exercise 9 more times (results in the GOTM thread.)

I’ve finished a few -- some low level OCC’s, five city/max Wonder challenges, and of course, Games of the Month (usually conquest).

I don't have the paciene to wait for a spaceship plus I never enjoyed the process of building one. Ever since Civ 1 I always preferred conquest. The only problem is, on easier levels (King, Emp) its too easy and on Diety its too tedious. Still, if I only play one or two games a month its not so bad.

Multiplayer is much more fun to me because of your opponents are actually creative and harder to conquer. Usually they give up before I have to go through the tedium of wiping out each city. :D

I had only landed one SS before I discovered CFC. I always played for world conquest. Now, I still go for conquest, but kept that last AI city while building up my civ and going to visit AC!;)

I didn't know that this was possible, looks like I will have to attempt this for GOTM 19.

I play test of time (extended original) so i get to do both. while my spaceship is heading off to the deep beyonds, i turn my greedy eyes on earth. "pay back time" hehehehe

Well I have tried the dual victory for GOTM 19 and it didn't work. initially I tried to destroy the final civ on the turn that the spaceship was due to land and this is what has been submitted, this did not work , the first thing that happens in the turn is the ship landing and game over unable to destroy the civ.

So I went back a turn and replayed to destroy the final civ on the go before the spacship landed and still no joy, just the usual conquest victory. I wondered if it may be affected by the spaceship landing at 2020, so I reloaded an earlier save game, rush buy a few SS parts and launch for an earlier landing, again attempting to destroy the civ on the same turn as landing and on the turn before, still no luck. Maybe it is a quirk of version, but it doesn't work with FW.

I agree with some of you. By the time SS techs are researched the computer civs are beat. No fun beating a dead horse. Better to go start a new game this time as the Greeks, or the Zulus, or the English, French, hehe

Not smart enough to do both, I'm afraid. I like building SS, but I enjoy conquering the world a little better. The problem is not to do it too early. But I also hate leaving that one pet city and then sitting there building cities, improvements, worrying about tax rates, feeding the populace, smacking around the random barbarian attacks, etc. Wish there was some way to shorten the game after all the competition has been eliminated.
