Funny or Weird names of places

First, to us croats Pula doesn`t realy sound funny or strange, and its name meaning a certain thing in other languages.. well, people from over there are officialy our country`s worst lovers

Second, yes, Krk is really strange, I think about that often (my wife`s grandparents live there, and some of my friends have houses there too)

And third, is "St.Peter in the woods" a strange name for a place or no? :crazyeye:

The Swedish village of Fitta (now a Stockholm suburb) changed it's name to Fittja when the original meaning of the name (moist place, basically) got corrupted to a more ...feminine meaning.

I posted that before.

Rio guadix (river guadix) Maybe it doesn't sound funny, but let me explain where its name comes from.

Among the countless 'civilizations' that came to Spain, the semithes were one of them, they found a river and they called it IX, meaning river in their languaje. Then, the arabs came, found the river and they called it Guad-ix (or wad-ix) meaining river ix in arab, (river-river, then) And finally, the spanish call it rio Guadix, meaning river-river-river.

Of course it is a river.
Reminds me of "Torpenhow Hill", allegedly a hill in England whose name was similarly layered from Celtic "tor" 'hill', Celtic "pen" 'hill', older English "how(e)" 'hill' or 'burial mound', and modern English "hill".

My four hills beat your three rivers. ;)

I never said there was no city with that name. As it trips the autocensor, a picture of the word would not be appropriate here.
