That is a great post, and I had to look up what gruel is. It seems I eat it all the time, except I use less water and cook it for hours so it is thicker.

- 3 dessert spoonfuls of oatmeal
- 1 pint of water
- a little salt
- Mix the oatmeal with a little cold water to make a paste
- Put the rest of the water in a pan
- Add the mixture and boil for 10 minutes
- Add the salt

- 2 cups water
- a little salt
- Put all the stuff in a rice/porrige cooker
- Press the button
- Come back between 1 and 24 hours later and eat it (the longer you leave it the thicker it is, and I like it thick)
