Nah, it's just that you have entered a "warm-up age" and the polar ice caps are becoming grasslands! Grasslands, but still unsettelable grass lands.

EDIT: And what's up with "Ashoka" I've only played games with "Asoka"

yeah i think everywhere beside USA calls it maize but correct me if im wrong

We call it corn in Canada. However, we don't put its syrup on pancakes. Maple all the way! :goodjob:

well we put maple syrup. BTW Sisutil you should go on to youtube and listen to weid al's Canadian Idiot it is quite funny

the native americans called corn/maize maize, or something equivalent to that. Corn is a western invented word (american I think), in Denmark it's called majs (almost same pronounciation as maize) so I think the general European language vote on corn is that it's maize ;)

yeah i think everywhere beside USA calls it maize but correct me if im wrong

Really, we have to go to the origin of the word and ask the question "What did the American Indians call it when they encountered Europeans?" and did the Spanish use the word mais because the American Indians called it mais? Did the American Indians of northern America have a different name for it than those of the south? Something that sounded like "corn"? Or are mais and corn European or colonial American terms altogether and not what it was called by the American Indians found by the colonists and conquistadors?

These references give some clues:

Upon realizing his inevitable doom, this barbarian warrior defending a city decided to make a quick exit stage left.

More barbarian fun. This unlucky axeman got stranded on a small patch of uncultured land due to The Great Wall. He spent about 1500 years isolated on that one square before my closest city popped.

I wonder what kind of Japanese culture they have up there on that mountain?

ruff, have you been feeding the dog chipotle and letting him play on the PC again?

meanwhile, in the "how stupid is she, and how gullible does she think i am?" department...

cathy, babe, i've refused to help you 6 times already. i'm going to keep refusing. there is no way that i'm going to accept responsibility for you as a vassal. get over yourself!

and i ain't falling for your act. "you shall have our loyalty." i know exactly how much anybody can depend on your loyalty -- not at ALL.

mostly i just giggle over how she's pleased, but only due to the influence of the hindu gods. our +s and -s are tied, she hates almost everything i've ever done. but because i'm not heathen, i'm apparently okay .

@mythmonster2
EDIT: And what's up with "Ashoka" I've only played games with "Asoka"
In french it's spelled with an 'h' so I renamed his name to the french version. P.S. Try typing 'Asoka' in the french wikipedia and you'll get 'Ashoka'.

@everyone that discussed about the origins of the word mais, corn, maize whatever...There's a french slang for it, and I ate corn 2 days ago and I said: 'C'est du bon blé d'Inde!' literral translation: 'This is some good indian wheat!' Blé d'Inde...False name given to the plant due to Colombus' belief that the new world was in fact India! and that the natives used to cultivate the plant in a way that it made their staple food like wheat was to the europeans.

I thought that's what the amerindians called corn

Corn didn't exist in Europe before the colonies were made.
The French came over, saw corn. The locals called it Maize, so the French called it Mais.

EDIT: Someone beat me to it. xD

"cathy, babe, i've refused to help you 6 times already. i'm going to keep refusing. there is no way that i'm going to accept responsibility for you as a vassal. get over yourself! "

You are leader of Russia too? That's what she's saying...

i'm going for cultural victory, so i know darn well i'll be last place in techs from a certain point, guaranteed. but this, from today's game, is new for me.

gandhi's little city there can't work any tiles, since i have it surrounded by culture. he has a machine gun in his, i have warriors defending mine since i'm spending my money on important military infrastructure like cathedrals, no biggie. but notice the Great Artist he's bringing over. even his great artist is more technologically advanced than mine are !!!!!

i still have way more culture than he does. maybe he settled the artist, i dunno. it's gone but if he bombed him it had zero effect, didn't gain any tiles and the city is still only 17% his. i'm not at all worried that he'll flip the land or my cities by actual culture formulas. but now i have this fear that the great artists i'm saving for culture bombs at the end of the game will revolt and want to join the indian empire just because they're sick of their old-fashioned clothes :(. oh dear.

btw he made the railroad, i didn't. i'm refusing to even learn chemistry so that the parthenon doesn't go obsolete. i'd rather walk slowly and get more GPPs .

you're the only one running hinduism, defend yourself with warriors and yet noone has declared war on you? is this from your always-peace game? ^^ if not, tell me the trick to survive into modern ages with warriors :D

tell me the trick to survive into modern ages with warriors :D
The AI has pity

Nah, when going for a culture victory the AI always leave it till the very end before attacking with a very big stack that they've been building up all game.

no, it's not always peace, but i stacked the deck by starting with no barbarians and handpicked opponents. and if you look closely, you'll see *most* of the world is in free religion by now ;).

details of what i did so that my warriors didn't get mech infantried to death (yet) spoilered for space cuz it's not a funny screenshot ;)
Spoiler :
i ran no state religion, and then free religion, until everyone was in free religion except the 3 that still have state religions now. that sucked, i wanted to be in pacifism for more GPs, but i couldn't afford to risk ticking anybody off. job #1 is make nice-y nice. the most popular religion before FR days was judaism, one of the only 2 religions that never ever spread to me, of course . oh i did convert once or twice when someone demanded that i do it, to get the +1. and every time i did that, i wished i was playing as gandhi instead of liz, spiritual so rocks for making friends!

the only one that doesn't like me, and pretty much never did, is cyrus. he really doesn't like me, quite a bit. he did stuff like demand philo when i was the only one that had it and wanted to get liberalism first, etc., so i denied him some demands. the last straw was washington making me quit trading with him, and cyrus was already in "we have too much on our hands" phase . i had to go with washington though, since he was my neighbor. cyrus was #1 in power but wash was #2 and right next door, and close enough to friendly that i didn't want to blow it, he was my target for future DP protector. anyway... cyrus refused to talk to me after i cancelled trades. for like 30 or more turns. so i'm freaking out, but everybody else likes me.

then i hear the "declare war" trumpets and i'm afraid to look at the screen.
cyrus has declared war...on mansa musa! it was the religion i guess, they're neighbors and mansa's buddhist and cyrus is jewish; i didn't have the heathen factor back then, cyrus just didn't like me since i kept refusing him things. i wasn't sure which of us he hated more, since our totals added up the same on the screen, but mansa was the lucky winner.

the turn after the war broke out is when i finally got to declare a religion, hinduism, which i founded way back when, since i popped mysticism from a hut on turn 2. i'd wanted to run pacifism ever sincie popping philo but i couldn't, it wasn't safe politically. most of the world doesn't believe in that "heathen" stuff any more so it's fairly safe ;).

i'm currently +8 to +13 with everybody except for the 3 running religions. two of those are distracted by war, which makes them like me even LESS since both have asked me to join in and i refused, but i'm not worried about them since they're busy. hatty's the third, and she's pleased, the only negative at all is the heathen thing. she likes mansa less than she likes me, since he has the heathen factor, has traded less with her, and they have border tensions. and she's even pleased with him, at a total of -2! besides, i have DPs with both my neighbors now :)

edit: forgot, mansa liked but didn't particularly love me. i have fair/forthright trading bonuses but not my usual "years of supplying resources". he was the lone buddhist ranger all along, so i knew that if i traded resources with him, people would demand that i cancel deals. i'm not sure why so many people decided to hate cyrus. he wasn't the only jewish believer, but he was the one that the followers of other faiths kept complaining about for some reason. but it was obvious that was going to happen if i made those deals with mansa. anyway, that's another thing i pay attention to, if there's one particular person that looks like most folks won't like them, then i don't get involved in any deals you can be asked to cancel (open borders, resource/money trades). being asked to cancel those is a lose/lose situation; you're going to earn a negative with one side or the other, so i just prefer to not start 'em in the first place if i can tell the guy is gonna be trouble. techs tho, i'm gonna trade techs if it's mansa musa, i mean come ON!!!

i just know from turn 0 in culture games that i'm going fall behind in tech, and that my priority won't be military in the first place. so while i do have a tech lead, i trade wisely and well and very very generously, to get those +s up and be buddies with everybody. after a certain point i won't have any new way to trade with them, i won't ever know anything they don't know already, so if they don't already like me i can't make them like me. i won't have presents to hand out and i won't even be able to earn "you gave us help" +1s since i'll have nothing to demand . i get to be so pathetic at the end, it's really fun and suspenseful. it's hysterical. i love OCCs on high levels, you get pitifully sooooo far behind and you ask them "can you spare X tech for a friend?" and they say "you press us too hard" and then often they come up they come within a few turns and offer it as a "you may this useful" handout hahaha! yeah ok, you're confused but thanks!

i still can't tell if i'm gonna win this one or not. i'm sure that through a combination of practice and the luck of cyrus picking mansa not me, that i'm not gonna get beaten up. but i'm not sure i'm gonna win the game before they do, since i have all the victory types on, and gandhi's getting a tech a turn, 2 techs on leapturns it feels like. i'm so far behind i can't tell where they are on the tech tree at all, part of the suspense

if i do get defeated by an AI bds-inspired SoD at the end of this game, i'll post a screenshot of it here, but i can't promise i'll find it very amusing *giggle*.
