Mad Scientist
Well, I'm already working on a future mod, with three additional Eras to the game (Digital, Fusion, and Nanotech), based heavily on the Alpha Centauri game. So far, I have a lot of stuff planned out; as I was coming up with ideas, I realized that there's room for a LOT of new concepts. I mainly added three new unit Types (Energy, Psi, and Titan)... Energy is like the successor to "Gunpowder", Titan is the successor to "Armor", and Psi is just... different.
Going from low-tech to high-tech, I've got:
Probe Team (upgraded spy)
Engineer (more mobile Worker that has the combat strength of a Rifleman)
Scorpion (nearly-immobile defensive unit, sort of like the Machine Gunner)
Mind Worms (Psi)
Deathclaw (Melee, small, fast, cheap, hidden nationality, no resources needed)
Isle of the Deep (Psi naval unit)
Agent (anti-spy unit that counts double for military police)
Heavy Transport (Naval)
Stealth Ship (cross between Submarine and Destroyer)
Dreadnaught (cross between Carrier and Battleship)
Plasma Artillery (good AA and collateral artillery in one)
Skimmer (light hovertank)
Needlejet (Air, cross between Stealth Bomber and Jet Fighter)
Laser Infantry
Scout Powersuit
Zombie (cheap Worker that can also be used as cannon fodder)
Locusts of Chiron (Psi "helicopter" unit)
Attack Vertol (Helicopter; much more mobile, and can defend)
Transport Vertol
Heavy Powersuit
Gravship (think the battlecruisers from Starcraft)
Gravtank
Mobile Shield
Combat Mech
Worker Mech
Chaos Artillery
Elf (adapted human; huge offense, stealth, mobility, but weak defense)
Dwarf (adapted human; huge defense, but not so hot on offense)
Dragon (helicopter-like unit)
Nessus Worm (big Psi unit)
Hunter-Killer (huge air unit)
Orbital Ion Cannon (basically, a bomber with unlimited range and no chance of intercept)
Behemoth (huge engineered land unit- Godzilla!)
Former (large worker unit, can do pretty much anything in 1 turn)
Doppelganger (Psi attacker that also doubles as the ultimate spy unit)
Bolo (massive land unit)
Planet Buster (improved ICBM- utterly destroys anything in target square, no defense)
String Disruptor (huge tank/artillery)
Orbital Death Ray
Anyway, I might add more things as time goes on, but what it pretty much comes down to is, take every "modern" unit and figure out what the next two upgrades will be.
