Well, I'm already working on a future mod, with three additional Eras to the game (Digital, Fusion, and Nanotech), based heavily on the Alpha Centauri game. So far, I have a lot of stuff planned out; as I was coming up with ideas, I realized that there's room for a LOT of new concepts. I mainly added three new unit Types (Energy, Psi, and Titan)... Energy is like the successor to "Gunpowder", Titan is the successor to "Armor", and Psi is just... different.

Going from low-tech to high-tech, I've got:
Probe Team (upgraded spy)
Engineer (more mobile Worker that has the combat strength of a Rifleman)
Scorpion (nearly-immobile defensive unit, sort of like the Machine Gunner)
Mind Worms (Psi)
Deathclaw (Melee, small, fast, cheap, hidden nationality, no resources needed)
Isle of the Deep (Psi naval unit)
Agent (anti-spy unit that counts double for military police)
Heavy Transport (Naval)
Stealth Ship (cross between Submarine and Destroyer)
Dreadnaught (cross between Carrier and Battleship)
Plasma Artillery (good AA and collateral artillery in one)
Skimmer (light hovertank)
Needlejet (Air, cross between Stealth Bomber and Jet Fighter)
Laser Infantry
Scout Powersuit
Zombie (cheap Worker that can also be used as cannon fodder)
Locusts of Chiron (Psi "helicopter" unit)
Attack Vertol (Helicopter; much more mobile, and can defend)
Transport Vertol
Heavy Powersuit
Gravship (think the battlecruisers from Starcraft)
Gravtank
Mobile Shield
Combat Mech
Worker Mech
Chaos Artillery
Elf (adapted human; huge offense, stealth, mobility, but weak defense)
Dwarf (adapted human; huge defense, but not so hot on offense)
Dragon (helicopter-like unit)
Nessus Worm (big Psi unit)
Hunter-Killer (huge air unit)
Orbital Ion Cannon (basically, a bomber with unlimited range and no chance of intercept)
Behemoth (huge engineered land unit- Godzilla!)
Former (large worker unit, can do pretty much anything in 1 turn)
Doppelganger (Psi attacker that also doubles as the ultimate spy unit)
Bolo (massive land unit)
Planet Buster (improved ICBM- utterly destroys anything in target square, no defense)
String Disruptor (huge tank/artillery)
Orbital Death Ray

Anyway, I might add more things as time goes on, but what it pretty much comes down to is, take every "modern" unit and figure out what the next two upgrades will be.

Nano-bots and chemical warfare kthxpls.

The droids in star wars movies are pretty wicked. Specifically in Episode 1, the rolling security droids that attack Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan during the diplomatic mission.

I'd really like paratroopers and helicopters to make a come-back. I'd also like modern day barbarians/privateer ground units. a.k.a. terrorists :). Some would operate without government funding (barbarian) and some would (privateer). They would sabotage improvements, buildings, production, etc.

The spy game really sucks in civ 4, and it really is the battleground of advanced civilizations. Needs work.

although someone could argue that noone knows what we could invent in the distant future...:p

True, but even if an energy sword could deflect a plasma bolt, it would be much easier to train troops to shoot at people than to deflect things traveling at 200 miles an hour.

Oh, and Spatzimaus, might I suggest you create an alternate version of your mod without the fantasy units? The idea of elves randomly appearing in the future seems weird, and doubt even the biggest Lord of the Rings nerds would bother to genetically engineer them.

My ideal Psi units would be trained mentally to see all attacks coming(*cough*Telepathy and Telekinesis*cough*) Just saying if we were able to have that mental ability/power in the future then it could happen.
My idea(doesnt even have to be with an energy sword)
Psionic Warrior or Energy Warrior
Chance to deflect attacks back to attacker
+50% defense against non-Psi units
(maybe)-25% strength against Mechs(or any similar thing(because Psi attacks shouldnt be able to affect non-living things))
+25% strength against non-Psi units(except non-living units)

Basically it would be an anti-personnel unit.

Edit: I'll just say my idea of a Psi unit is this then ^

Spatzimaus' Psi units could do that(the energy sword deflection ability)

Actually, no. When I said "Psi unit", I meant it in the Alpha Centauri sense: a unit that bypasses the usual strength-vs-strength combat system. It was simple: if EITHER of the units involved is a Psi unit, the attacker always has a 3:2 edge over the defender (barring certain unit special abilities or wonders, but ignoring the effects of terrain, city defenses, fortifying, etc.) Basically, I wanted these in the game so that a civ that's fallen behind on the tech curve isn't totally outclassed.

This has absolutely nothing to do with energy-deflecting swords.
