Future of Civ 4

Would playing Civ further into the future be a good idea or bad?

  • Bad idea - Civ is mostly a historical game, and it would break tradition.

I'm undecided. On one hand, the ability to have a few future techs and units would be good fun, but on the other hand, the late game needs improving, and I don't think that this would be achieved by adding a future age.

i think there shuld be alot more techs in the modern age as well. i like the ideas listed.

my thoughts.

why can a horsearcher move as much a tank?

why not add the ability to refuel in the air?

add different aircraft options, each enabled by a different tech.

and yes, since a marine can not travel 600 miles in a day with out a transport, add land transports.

add units to do the air transporting instead of clicking a button and *POOF* the unit is in the city.

and yes, add a modern method of increasing movement.

i like adding some type of global warming guage.

i remember in civ2 i could build caravans. i know now i can get a great merchant, but i would like to build the caravan unit, freight, or what ever. it doesn't have to give as much gold as a GM, and not add to a trade route, just be a sale of goods.

a prereq's to computers like microprocessor and supeconductor.

add techs to the modern era which enable something unique; like a unit and or a building.

in the modern era we don't just have a university. the little community college in my hometown is not the same as a yale or harvard. modern era should reflect different types of schools.

i just don't think you should have more or equal techs and units in ancient era than you would in the modern era. there are a lot of builders out there.

Well technically Civilization 4 does go into the future. Considering the space race that happens in the game is not something we can accomplish in the near future and is honestly a bit farfetched. Also the fact that you can have communism and a president and free speach, thats something we as a humanity have not been able to accomplish. The Environmentalism tech is futuistic. And as a millitary unit Mechanized Infantry is still a developing technology that is no where near perfected enough to be used in a modern battlefield. I'll find some more stuff later

Yes! Bring back the caravans! I dont know why they were ever done away with, especially considering the importance in real life of things like the salt road. Plus the ability to build food caravans again would be ideal synergy with city specialization. Then you could work a couple of extra mines in your production cities thanks to three or four food caravans coming from nearby fishing villages...

Personally, I think it would be better if they had a more detailed past than go into the future, and all the other games I have played or read/heard/watched a trailer/other advert about that go into the future have made the future a realy unrealistic future (I dont know about Call to Power because I havent played that) like massive metal mechs that are as tall as buildings and walk around blasting things like depicted in some games that go into the future would never happen, its a fun thought, but it would never really happen.

I just want to point out that the microprocessor came after the computer not before, the first electronic computers used vacumn tubes.

That sucks. How did Activision get away with making Call to power? Maybe they can do some sneaky stuff like that. They got away with it didn't they? Was it because Firaxis chose to let them or because Firaxis had no say?

You can't trademark all uses of a single word. So "Civilization: Call to Power" doesn't infringe on "Civilization". I think Firaxis did manage to claim the rights to "Civilization (number)" though. There was a lawsuit and there were some complicated legal deals cut.

They could name it something else entirely for all I care. ;) If they toy with the system too, it may not even resemble the orignal as much as we would probably think. I don't know if 2k would let them doing something like that anytime soon or not though if they have final say on it.

While i would really like that future techs would be added i think tha games already lacks too much in industrial, modern age.So the first thing to do IMO is filling the gap between ancient and industrial/modern era only after we could discuss a future age inside the game.

Yes, like beta centaury, or something like tau cetii or sigma sagitarius. After all, K2 can't have the rights of the words "Sid Meier". So Sid Meier Sigma Sagitarius sounds good enough.

I'd far more prefer a expansion which expanded on the current timescale with extra civs , wonders and past and present technolgies rather than some could be the future. I really liked CTP but really thought Genetic and Diamond age seriously sucked - why bother trying to guess the future when there's still a richdepository of known culture to mine

Colonizing the moon just seems strange--no Earth civilization has ever tried that. However, mounting strategic weapons on the moon...or a system of orbital satellites like in SMAC that can return resources/commerce to bases and intercept strategic weapons...that could be interesting. Or just spy satellites--give me something!
Anything new in that area would be an improvement.
Since the futur is now, their might just as well be new futur techs, to cover that part of the game in civ.

I think alot of people would like to see a part 2 to that. But I don't know how soon that will happen. I would hope Firaxis has considered it though. I would have prefered that over CivCity Rome but I think that was more of a fun project for the designers to explore a different building system from the sounds of it. I wouldn't mind seeing Colonization again too but I don't think that one has enough people pulling for it.
You bet their are !!! Civcity was fun, but it would be peanuts compared to well made remake of SMAC.

Perhaps they could call it SMBC : Sid Meier's Beta Centaury, like Urederra suggests.
That would be perhaps a 2nd spaceship that left earth, after the first one.
Or that the inhabitants of the colonized moon around the earth would rather run off somewhere together, then recreate the wars of the different fractions that live on earth.

Or it could be a spaceship of people who came from alpha centauri, but didn't feel like trying the ascention.

My gripe is the fact that once you reach the last era of the game, you're pretty much winding down the game (unless you're going for Space Race). If you're playing for Conquest or Domination, you'll have fought most of your campaigns. If you're after Culural, you'll be patiently waiting for your 3 cities to reach Legendary Culture. Diplomatic's merely a wait for the UN whilst keeping other Civs happy. And if you're going for Time...you need your head checked

It's somehting that happened with me on Civ3. Mech Infantry and Modern Armour, the only aspects of the modern era I'd normally be interested in, would come too late to make a significant difference to my game.

Maybe a future era would be good (would'nt add too much to game IMO) but I'd rather they make modern era a bit more worth its while.
