Liz seems to be the people's choice for culture though (although she starts with fishing, which isn't too great on Panagaea).
I had 4 religions. Unless you can get a load of cash together to rush buy temples/missionaries it's hard to spread that many to your culture cities in time for them to build the cathedrals.
I should have mentioned WHY I wanted an early religion
. It's for religious manipulation. We are forced to have a somewhat dangerous AI (Kublai, who is actually MUCH more of a warring sissy than ghengis when the AI has him, but will still attack if provoked), and two of the most aggressive, warmongering, backstabbing AIs in the game (Monty, whom we all know and love, and Napoleon, who actually builds more units and is equally aggressive!).Founding an early religion and not spreading it tends to block the world a bit. More importantly, it affects the timing of when AIs get a religion. Later confucianism and christianity can be spread using the founding missionaries to other AIs and cause quite the scapegoating. If the player is then spread the majority religion, he gets 5-6 religions and incredibly favorable diplomacy where his odds of being declared on are next to nil.
Now the problems:
1) Getting enough cities
2) Mids for rush buy really helps but conflicts with 1
3) Sub-ideal techpath although very tradeworthy on monarch
On a large map you will still need 9 cities. My experience thus far is that this is actually pretty easy to attain peacefully on monarch or even emperor on a STANDARD map with a lot of starts. On large with only 8 opponents, likely more so.
When to put the culture slider up? Conceivably it could be done after grabbing music and 5-6 religions, but cottages won't have their potential yet. Alternatively, one can push lib (which is shockingly easy with religious manipulation crushing the world tech rate via war) and take nationalism, opening up the hermitage and free speech, which I THINK is the right way to go since it offers up 100% in 2 of your cities and another 100% in your weakest one.
The way I see it, temples can be whipped, missionaries can be handled in a good hammer city or two. US from mids would then mostly concentrate on rush buy (and the bonus hammers) available in the 3 commerce culture cities.
Some tight constraints, but that's what playing a lot of games and the HoF challenge is for
.
