G-Major 36

Liz seems to be the people's choice for culture though (although she starts with fishing, which isn't too great on Panagaea).

I had 4 religions. Unless you can get a load of cash together to rush buy temples/missionaries it's hard to spread that many to your culture cities in time for them to build the cathedrals.

I should have mentioned WHY I wanted an early religion ;). It's for religious manipulation. We are forced to have a somewhat dangerous AI (Kublai, who is actually MUCH more of a warring sissy than ghengis when the AI has him, but will still attack if provoked), and two of the most aggressive, warmongering, backstabbing AIs in the game (Monty, whom we all know and love, and Napoleon, who actually builds more units and is equally aggressive!).

Founding an early religion and not spreading it tends to block the world a bit. More importantly, it affects the timing of when AIs get a religion. Later confucianism and christianity can be spread using the founding missionaries to other AIs and cause quite the scapegoating. If the player is then spread the majority religion, he gets 5-6 religions and incredibly favorable diplomacy where his odds of being declared on are next to nil.

Now the problems:

1) Getting enough cities
2) Mids for rush buy really helps but conflicts with 1
3) Sub-ideal techpath although very tradeworthy on monarch

On a large map you will still need 9 cities. My experience thus far is that this is actually pretty easy to attain peacefully on monarch or even emperor on a STANDARD map with a lot of starts. On large with only 8 opponents, likely more so.

When to put the culture slider up? Conceivably it could be done after grabbing music and 5-6 religions, but cottages won't have their potential yet. Alternatively, one can push lib (which is shockingly easy with religious manipulation crushing the world tech rate via war) and take nationalism, opening up the hermitage and free speech, which I THINK is the right way to go since it offers up 100% in 2 of your cities and another 100% in your weakest one.

The way I see it, temples can be whipped, missionaries can be handled in a good hammer city or two. US from mids would then mostly concentrate on rush buy (and the bonus hammers) available in the 3 commerce culture cities.

Some tight constraints, but that's what playing a lot of games and the HoF challenge is for :p.

I put the slider up after Free Speech, it doesn't seem cost-effective before then.

EDIT: Watch out for Asoka as well, his favourite civic is Free Religion so he beat me by miles to liberalism ;) But Gandhi is a reknnowned Wonder Spammer (Asoka did that inn my game anyway).

I put asoka in because Gandhi pursues culture more himself and goes for things like oracle more obnoxiously quickly. In my only test game so far though, I bribed monty to attack asoka repeatedly ;). This didn't accomplish much other than keeping monty away from me early and slowing down Asoka (and making him not like me too much)...but that's enough.

The interesting thing about these AIs is that while they're dangerous, they're so easy to bribe!

I screwed up my priorities a little bit though so I'm going to start a new one. It looks like a competitive finish is in the 1500-1600's AD...that's going to be a bit tight but I'll try.

I missed the Parthenon by 2 turns to Asoka so that ruled out any competitiveness for me, I think it was 1760ish. I can't be bothered doing it again, it took me over a week ;)

The HOF table for this gauntlet setting was empty before this gauntlet so the current HOF table for these settings will show you the best games from the first half of the gauntlet.

Enjoy it anyway, it was a fun game for me ;)

I had fun with it too but even at only 2 full workdays (20 hours), I won't be trying it again.

Time for an immortal UN victory!

because she's philosophical (for the GE to rush the Sistine chapel, for 2 GS to bulb Educ and Printing Press and lots of GA)

and financial

since the game is at marathon, it wouldn't much matter if you have a useless starting tech.

no.... someone beat my mid-1500s finish. can he/she identify himself/herself and state exactly what year he/she finished?

It wasn't me...the only way I'll probably be able to tolerate this is mass automation of workers.

I'll probably skip it TBH, and get my marathon requirement out of the way via conquest for EQM. Culture can be saved for quick .

I think Liz is probably best for culture too, I tried the deity quick culture gauntlet a few months back with her. Didn't do me much good though ;)

I am saving Liz for a higher difficulty level I think for EQM. (Same with Fred, Gandhi who are both also very strong I think). I have a QM win with Liz (that was the settler space gauntlet on quick!) however.

It was me :-)

As to what date i finished... all i'm saying is that i believe a 1400's finish is possible. Though probably only with a nearly perfect starting location and perhaps not with Liz. My finish was in the 1500's, but my strategy wasn't perfect and I made a few small mistakes that cost some turns.

I'd recomend Saladin. His philosophical/spiritual combo is ideal for massing up culture while staying fairly safe in diplomatically difficult terrain.

In several of my attempts with saladin i actually ended up best buddies with montezuma, napoleon, kublai or isabella - once even with all 4 of them for a while.... and having strong and war-eager friends is quite helpful in this gauntlet to prevent having to fight the enemy on your home turf..

Sal is PHI/PRO in warlords and bts. Gandhi has the PHI/SPI traits in the expansions instead, making him even more favored for culture.

If ghandi keeps mining as starting tzech in warl/bts, then he definetly is quite a bit better than saladin even.

I need to buy warl/bts some day :-(

Yep, Gandhi still has mining as a starting tech. Like I said, I'm saving him for a higher level ;)

thanks to you, I am working my butt on this gauntlet again. :D

I also think Saladin is a powerful choice for this one (building temples is a pain); though I have to stick with Liz for now since I have to keep a very very wide tech distance with Napoleon (I am actually scared of the fast moving Musketeers, so I have to get Rifling while he is still on his way to Gunpowder) and for the religion race against Mansa (without Liz's financial trait, Mansa might beat me with Philosophy).

Oh well, I guess I really have to stretch Liz to her very very limit to be able to finish at the 1400s. <fingers crossed>

Nooooooooo! Don't force me to try this gauntlet again to stay number 1. Do you have any idea how many attempts i made at this gauntlet before i made it?

Ah well, starting up MapFinder again....

uhh, I was number 1 for days so it's only natural for me to try to reclaim the spot.

I usually run Mapfinder the whole night (9 pm 'till dawn, while I'm sleeping) then I get 100+ saves and among those, 10-20 are really yummy starting positions. You might get spared of the many attempts by doing this.

3 days before this race ends... :)

EDIT: My latest endeavor just got accepted. Back at no.1 now :) I can go back to gmajor 37 this time or try for my first ever gminor
