G-Major 36

I think I'm about 100 turns away from finishing this. Just need to make sure that all those Infantries and Airships I see buzzing around my borders don't come in and spoil the party.

I'm playing as the Khmer, using the Creative trait and the Baray food bonus to run a mostly specialist economy supported by Mercantilism and Representation and Caste System. Now that I know which cities will never produce a Great Person before the end, I can switch all supporting cities to run Merchants to fund the 100% culture slider and artists in the Culture cities.

The main holdup has been the need to run a huge defensive army, and the pollution of the Great Artist pool from Oracle and Great Library.

that looks troublesome. can't you get a defensive pact with someone?

got the same problem.

Medecine or biology from liberalism, use the coastline that gives most seafood, abuse sushi as much as possible, build all those nice artist wonders, don't chose anyone who are not peaceful. Options are either darius(or similar) for a immortals are cheaper than settler aproach(needs cramped map) or just go with lizzy, stuff in mansa, ghandi and the other high speed techers in the hope of maybe trading for something... If you are going to biology anyways pollution from great library won't be much of a problem though not sure it will be worth it anyways...

Unfortunately, it's tough to find a "peaceful" Monty, Issy or Mongol all of whom are required.

Cyrus has been the most unpeaceful in my game (especially towards me and poor old lovely, ever friendly and nice Isabella ;)).

How's this for frustrating?

With about 60 turns to go, Gandhi asks for a Defensive Pact. I say No, on the basis that it might be a bit risky if big boy Lincoln declared on him and swept me along in his wake.

Then, about 6 turns later, with Gandhi 'pleased' with me, peaceful little Gandhi declares war on ME! Even after declaring war, he still has a positive attitude to me.

So, now my only chance is to somehow weather the initial onslaught (unfortunately he has artillery now), and maybe lose a couple of cities before getting peace again.

I will be pretty annoyed if l lose from here after pressing Enter so many times.

Any idea what could make Gandhi attack me out of the blue like that?

I'm getting close to 1000 AD. And, nearing cathedral building phase. My biggest problem is that the Hinduism I founded is my only religion. Highly doubt I'll get Islam, but I think it's still there for the taking. But, wow, lots of turns to discover that one, at this point.

Sure wish someone would bring me some missionaries. Seems they usually do. But, not so far in this one. Doesn't seem like they only do it when cities have no religion. All 8 of my cities have Hindu.

On this Pangaea map, I had no trouble assimilating all other religions without doing anything conscious. I only founded Confuscianism but ended up with all the others.

I'm doing OK, reckon I will win around 1600-1700AD ish. I am first to rifling so am about to turn off research, should get the win in 250-300 turns. Asoka still pleased and he is the only real threat. All the other Ais are going to war with each other which is good for me. Cyrus still hates me but he just has a bunch of Knights so I can deal with them by keeping some cash aside to upgrade longbows and pikes to rifles.

Most interesting game i have played in the HOF so far...

[EDIT: If a tad too long ;)]

Yeah, marathon sucks if you are not doing an early conquest/dom rush...

Entertaining game though, lots of war and diplomatic shenaniganising.

I don't get it. I'm up to like 1300 AD now, and still have not had one other religion spread to me. Cyrus and Gandhi have different religions and we still have open borders, too. Genghis was Hindu with me forever, but just switched to Confucian, and joined the ranks of Isabella and Napoleon who were sworn enemies of mine due to religion.

Cmon Cyrus and Gandhi! Get your butts over here with those missionaries!

My culture cities have 4 religions each without doing anything deliberate. Are you sure you're not running Theocracy or something?

God, this Gauntlet can be so annoying at times.... In my latest game i had nice positions for my first cities and popped both masonry and bronze working from goody huts. Got myself Stonehenge, Parthenon and Oracle, got Alphabet with it, and was way ahead of my schedule. My religion staggered at first, but then spread nicely - the whole world besides Isa and Cyrus shared it. Monti, my direct neighbour, actually liked me, Napoleon, my neighbour on the other side, was fine with me too and busy with cyrus all the time anyway, and things looked like i might get a great finish.

And what happens then? First Kublai comes and razes my poorly defended outpost city. No problem, I ask Mansa to war him and stop his invasion at one of my main cities and make peace. Great, first war over, all is fine. As if... Suddenly Monti, despite being pleased or perhaps even friendly, declares war on me. Again i ask Mansa for the rescue and stop Monti at the gates. Annoyed by the treachery i send out some troops to destroy one of Montis recently founded cities before i let him get away with peace... just as I am at the gates, Isa declares war on me.
Before she can send more troops than that 1 chariot at my border, i ask Hatshi to war her, which she gladly does. Destroyed Montis city, made peace with him and rushed my troops back home to fight isa... By the time they got back, that damn chariot had pillaged most of my vital improvements. But at least Monti declared war on Isa now too, so i thought i'd be fairly safe for a few turns... Wrong :-(
On his way to Isa, Monti's stack detours my way, declares war the instant the peace treaty is over, and hurls his troops at one of my culture cities. The odds are in my favour, but fate is not: my best city falls to Monti :-(

Down to two cities, devastated countryside, with too few troops in the other cities to put up a fight, and pretty annoyed i gave up. Next game i will destroy monti as soon as i spot him

Funny reports above :) These are the games with Napoleon, Izzy, Monte and Kublai

I only continue playing maps in this gauntlet, if I had a buffer-civ between the warmongers and me.

Additional tips:
- never found an early religion, open borders and wait for the religions to come in
- join the religion of your peaceful neighbors a push the relation up as high as possible
- if you have an immediate warmonger renew your trade each 10 turns, even if you get a lot of gpt and you have to grant if for free. It guarantees 10 turns of peace.
- Have at least one production city producing non-stop units, always the advanced ones and show them to the warmongers (assuming that you are technology advanced)
- do everything to keep your allies happy (share wars, grant technologies, ...)

If conquest is a better alternative I don't have a strategy for this. I only recognized, that maintenance really hurts and smashes the economy.

You need no religion cities and connection to the holy city for a "natural spread".

As for missionaries spread, you need OB, they need to be able to reach your lands, they need to be the religion founder. Then they choose whcih city to infect according to:
- size of city
- number of religions already present
- proximity

I can't know the details of your game. Pangea should offer you more religions than you can use... Why don't you found a puny city just next to their borders?

Does it?

Need to decide now (immediately after researching rifles) whther to switch to US to rush buy or continue with representation (I'd need to run culture at 10% or so to make up for the happiness bonus loss if I switched to US).

Also need to decide whether to switch to Free Market or continue with Merc. If I switch to US I'll definitely go FM. I'll probably go FM just before going max culture slider.
