Gal Civ 2 Ultimate for beginners

Don't listen to me on GC as I kept buying each addon for GC1 and GC2 (except twilight), hoping I could get into it. Does not make it a bad game, just not for me and I am a huge Moo1/2 player as my avatar suggest.

I like Distant Worlds Universe, just not got to play that much so far.

It's possible I'll be the same way, but intend to give GC2 more time. I like Distant Worlds, but its sheer scale ultimately works against it - there's too much galaxy to colonise and explore without very much more content than, say, a MOO galaxy (all the same planet types, for instance, similar number of phenomena like black holes, only a couple of space monster types, limited suite of ancient artifacts). There are a lot of resources, but those too repeat quickly and you get most of what you need from a small core of colonised systems and trade partners. The number of factions and the emergent civilisation feature (something I always wanted from games like this) adds variety, but ultimately the game gets sufficiently grindy when going for the win condition that I've played a lot of games and never finished any.

Out of curiosity, what is it about GC that makes you unable to enjoy it?

Its been a while since my last attempt. What I recall was hard to find decent planets to colonize. Did not like the good, bad and ugly choices on events and there were too many events.

Influence and trade could be abused too easily.

Combat was not much fun and it was too easy to just not have wars.

It was not a bad game, but I just could not stick to it and would soon put it away to play something else.

Not like so many games that I still play years later and usually finish every game, such as Moo1/2, Homm2/3.

It looks like you can smash GC3 with spamming research, but that at least that could be fun. It is usually satisfying to learn techs.

I know GC2 was very well received, so I am probably an outlier.
