Civilization 4 was working fine for me until when I recently downloaded the latest official patch. Now when I'm about to resume or start a new game, Civilization 4 automatically closes and I get this error message:

Your system has run out of video memory. Please try reducing your video settings.
File:\civilization4.bak\SDKs\Gamebryo2_0\CoreLibs\NiDX9Renderer\NiDX9RenderedTextureData.cpp, Line: 167

Then it says something like "This application has chosen its runtime to terminate in an unusual way"...

...Does anyone know what I should do? I figure I have to change my video settings, but I don't know how.

By the way, I have 512mb or ram. So I don't think that's the problem.

512 is not very much ram these days. You probably have your graphics settings in the game set too high. Cant remember exactly how to get there but from the main menu (in the game) you can find the video settings for the game and lower everything. just a guess though. I imagine more help will come if you post your system specs. CPU, Video Card

These are the specs I know of. I don't know what DX-Diag is.

2.8GHz Intel Pentium 4 Processor
512mb 266MHz DDR SDRAM memory
nVidia GeForce FX 5100 with 64 MB

I play the game with the lowest settings.

It's strange. I uninstalled the game and then reinstalled, added the v1.09 patch (the one before the newest) and the game worked fine. Something in the new patch might be stuffing things up for me.

The patch added in a Memsaver that can put more load onto the video card, you might have it on so knock it off in the Civ4.ini. Search for 'Memsaver' and set it to 0.

DxDiag: 'Start' > 'Run...' > Type 'DxDiag' > 'Save all info' then attach the text file to your next post. Update the drivers to 81.98 of you haven't done already. http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_2k_81.98.html

64mb of video RAM is likely to be the problem so increase the BIOS AGP aperture size to 128mb, assuming it's a AGP card. You'll find it under 'Advanced Chipset Features' in the BIOS setup. This will move some of the graphic memory into the main RAM.
I think another 512mb stick of RAM should help too.

Thanks. I uninstalled the game and then reinstalled and added the patches again. It's working now for some reason.
