Game crash/exit before the second turn starts

I have the latest BtS installed and also installed that Fall from Heaven mod with its latest update as well. I installed the BtS on top of a warlord installation.

I'm running windows vista and should have the latest service packs and drivers for my graphics card, directx etc.

I start a new game and pretty much go through defaults all the way to game start - i always start by moving my scout/warrior and then i either build the city at the start-spot or i move a few spaces for a better location.

Every time i do this the game crashes and exits - just before the computer starts moving (or atleast before i get my second turn). Sometimes it happens with i hit 'build city' and sometimes it happens when i hit end turn.

This happens both with the Fall from Heaven mod, the Charlemaine mod or the default non-mod scenario of the BtS game.

Does anyone know what could go wrong, please?

is there any error message when it crashes?

Not really but i'm afraid that's just Vista being 'nice' - i tried to start the debugger and it said something about 'access violation'.

Hey thanks for being persistent :)

It happens every time when the turn ends. I never get to the other civs moving. I captured the windows showing the errors even though they don't tell much (to me anyways).

The errors came in the sequence matching the numbers (civ4error1, civ4error2, etc.)

Hope this helps?

:hmm:
Disclaimer: I am not running Vista myself so anything I say is mainly an educated guess.
I'd still like you to post a screenshot of about this build (start Civ4, click on advanced, click on about this build).
I know that vista uses weird access rights: did you install the game with administrator privileges? is it running in a compatibility mode (e.g. XP compatibility)?

My account is supposed to be local admin and i think i even installed it with 'run as administrator'.

The setup is a bit wierd though because i had the Civ4 Warlords on a CD (brought some collectors edition box with all the civ games, a playing card game, a booklet and some posters) Then i updated the game and tried running that mod called Fall from Heaven and it didn't work - so i did a lot of updating on that till i found out i needed the Beyond the Sword update which i got but then it didn't work - i then got the expansion BtS and installed it - then the update then Fall from Heaven - so i've been installing a lot :P

Anyways here is the 'about this build'...

your BtS patch failed, i.e. 3.13 only installed partially. This is not an uncommon thing. Note: the below is the 1000000000000th repost of something that works for Windows XP - the file paths *might* be different on Vista. Also this is based on an install using only CD versions of Civ4 and all its expansions...

install the most recent version of DirectX 9c from Microsoft

then do the following for a clean reinstall:

Uninstall and Reinstall Civ4 Warlords BtS :

Try to follow this order when doing stuff:
Use Control panel to uninstall Beyond the Sword, then Warlords, then Vanilla
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\my documents\my games\sid meier's civilization 4" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\my documents\my games\warlords" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\my documents\my games\beyond the sword" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\application data\my games\sid meier's civilization 4" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\application data\my games\warlords" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\application data\my games\beyond the sword" manually
(note: application data is a hidden directory so you need to configure windows explorer to show hidden files, also these directories in application data are sometimes removed by the uninstall routine)
Delete "...\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information\{CFBCE791-2D53-4FCE-B3FB-D6E01F4112E8}" (Civ4)
Delete "...\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information\{3E4B349F-10B5-4586-9D99-489A90A8B228}" (Warlords)
Delete "...\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information\{32E4F0D2-C135-475E-A841-1D59A0D22989}" (BtS) (note: InstallShield Installation Information is a hidden directory so you need to configure windows explorer to show hidden files).
Install Vanilla, immediately patch it to 1.61 (download it fresh from here)
Install Warlords, immediately patch it to 2.08 (download it fresh from here)
Install Beyond the Sword, immediately patch to 3.13 (download it fresh from here).

Wow thanks i'll try tonight when the kids have gone to bed. Crossing my fingers and hoping for this to work - thanks for the help :)
