Game Crash when loading another game during play

Well...3.02 didn't really fix anything.

AppName: civ4beyondsword.exe AppVer: 3.0.2.94 ModName: cvgamecoredll.dll
ModVer: 1.0.0.1 Offset: 0018d130
:hmm: I had "hoped" it would be some other .dll which caused crashes for others.
Unfortunately there is not much that can be done about it - If I understand you correctly its save games that cause the crash - maybe upload one that crashes anyway, it is possible that they all have an error casued by saving them on your setup.
Also: try using Solver's Unofficial Patch that overwrites the civcoregamedll.dll with his version and he did include a variety of crash fixes that will probably make it into the official patch so maybe (this is a remote chance though) they already cover your problem. Other then that I can only recommend: upload a save and wait for the patch that has been announced for release in 2-3 weeks. :(

I too am getting these "corrupt save files". Before I quit a game I do a quick save, let the game progress, make a manual save, let the game progress again, then a 2nd manual save. Usually I'm able to get back in with one of the three. Failing that, I have to resort to the auto-saves. What a pain.

My saves are not corrupt. The game just crashes when i try to load from anywhere except the main menu.

The reload during gameplay, I have to drop out to the main menu and load from there instead of just hitting load after pushing the Esc button.

have you guys tried to upgrade to 3.03? As I said in post #16 (ECDLTF was my alter ego) since 3.03 the reload problems are gone. Of course I cannot swear that it is 3.03 who has turned the things, but try my settings as posted in #16. Meanwhile I have updated Solver's patch (and the BUG-Mode also) to the actual version. And still everything works fine, without *any* reload crashes.
So I really do think that it is 303 who cleared this bug.

3.03 definitely was not the cause, basically because 3.03 did not have any code changes that could have addressed this. Solver's patch on the other hand probably was the cause ;)
And you really should contact thunderfall (the site admin) to make sure your old login is deleted - double logins are very frowned upon on this site...

Didn't 303 contain some directx related changes? And maybe the reload crashes were due to some graphics/directx problems(?)

Thanks for the hint concerning my old login.

It just included some Vista compatibility stuff and the newest DirectX release - but you probably downloaded it before manually since it gave weird errors when it was not there...
Since Solver did solve (no pun intended :p) quite a lot of crashes I would rather credit him (and Blake)...

I have updated to 3.03, but I keep forgetting to try and load mid-game. I have gotten in the habit of dropping out to the main menu and doing reload from there. I will try a mid-game reload today and see what happens.

This problem has probably been around since the beginning. I noticed it back in Warlords. If you load a game and play awhile, loading another either from the main menu or options screen screws up my computer totally.

While the game usually plays ok, after a while my system will hard-lock or go blue screen and automatically reset when closing other non-related applications. I would venture a guess that the game doesn't free the memory properly when a game is closed and another loaded. Completely existing the game does.

I won't go into the extreme frustration this caused me since I had just built a new system at the time and thought my hardware was faulty. Imagine my surprise to find the random crashing was a result of this game.

I have confirmed all my problems disappear if I exit the game completely and restart it every time I want to load a game. I doubt a patch is going to easily fix this.

These 'corrupt' save files (and ones that just crash out) are a real pain. Is there another thread where this has been discussed further? Perhaps some possible solutions?

Because I've been forced to abandon some games, I'm currently making 6 saves every time I leave the game, plus a quick-save. The last time I played it took the 5th one before it would load. That's just nuts. One would think that, after a save, the file could be verified.

I am just glad I am not getting the corrupt saves problems. All my saves are fine, it just crashes when I try to reload mid-game. Dropping to the main menu and reloading from there is fine.

Yeah, I did learn to work around this loading a savegame crash by exiting to the main menu, but every once in a while I forget, and I just right now forgot again, so here I am posting in this very old thread... Hope this gets fixed.

Windows XP x64
C2D E6400
8600 GTS
BtS 3.13

Start app, start (any) new game with no mods. Save, load, works fine.
Start app, start new game with HOF 3.13.001 mod having been enabled, save, load, crashes.
Start app and game with HOF mod, save, exit to menu, load game, works fine.

Start app, load previously saved HOF mod game, answer yes to load the mod, works fine.
In that HOF mod game, load previously saved no mod game, answer yes to load no mod, works fine.

Game saves are not corrupt, just the loading function crashes.

You are most probably right. I looked at my about this build screen and it said the Civ4 exe was 3.13 and the savegame was 3.0.1.

I'm reinstalling and I'll let you know if it works, which I am guessing it will.

Edit: Didn't work. After reinstall I have the same error with the same about this build screen.

And this is the second time you've helped me (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?p=6480337#post6480337), so have some :gold:
So in light of my previous experiences I am just going to leave it alone and not mess things up further - unless you have any other good ideas. This is a relatively minor inconvenience when compared to other things like reinstalling Windows.

If only the HOF-Mod crashes I would assume that it is a problem with that. I don't know if you already posted your problem in their support thread, but even if you don't do anything else about it it would be good to do - since they are actively maintaining the mod.
If you want to dig deeper:
open \documents and settings\<username>\my documents\my games\beyond the sword\civilizationIV.ini and change all items with log in their name from 0 to 1 - then start a game and crash it somehow. After iut crashes post the contents of \documents and settings\<username>\my documents\my games\beyond the sword\logs (e.g. as a zip file) - maybe that contains some useful information...

Actually no - it is actively supported by people from this site, but while Civfanatics is one of the two major fan sites and has very good contacts to the publishers (and they often take stuff from popular mods like the HOF-Mod and include it in patches) it is not part of the official releases and thus not officially supported by Firaxis. It is in my opinion still the best mod if you don't want game rules changes but rather better interface options and some bugfixes that have not yet made it into an official patch :)

as to the log: there is something weird with it, the game claims that no mod is loaded yet all the additional files that come with the HOF-Mod are :crazyeye: I hope one of the HOF people can help you pin this down...

Can you point me to the correct thread to post in? The support thread I was about to post in is closed, and I don't want to bump a 2 year old thread.

I have this problem all the time.. no mods, vanilla BtS.. About screen tells me: Civ Ver 313, Save Ver 301, Build 3.0.0.1 ..

I tend to use quick save/load keys a fair bit.. and a few times in a 8-10 hr game Ill hit one save file that every time I try and quick-load it the game crashes out with a Windows ".. has caused an error, report it?" box.. yet I can load it ok after I start the program fresh.. then as soon as I shift-f8, prog crashes again..

haaaaaaate it.
