Game Crashes: NVIDIA 6600 GT

as noted several times before:

My game will crash unexpectedly and I sometimes get the dark squares where once discovered territory (or even my existing cities) will go black. At first I thought it was a vid card issue so I went and downloaded the latest Nvidia drivers (81.85) and that worked for a bit. Now, I am totally not unplayable, but rather annoyed because the game does crash and I cannot predict when it will happen and save before it does.

Specs:
P4 3.2 ghz
1 GB DDR2 RAM
60 GB HD with plenty of space remaining
GeForce 6600 GT (81.85 drivers loaded)

I am not doing any one particular thing for each crash. It seems to be random, but I can tell you that it did start after the creation of my first War Elephant. Not sure what the heck that means but there ya go.

*crossing fingers for fix soon*

Does this occur after awhile of playing, or immediately? If you load off of a save, do the squares go away?

the first time it occured, it crashed to desktop. I re-loaded the game (no-reboot) and I played for about 5 minutes (everything appeared normal again after reloaded the saved game) and then it actually crashed and rebooted my computer.

so I went and downloaded the latest graphic card drivers. rebooted. reloaded the game and played for awhile (I am guessing an hour but I really was not watching the time) before CTD again.

I'm having the exact same problem. Its very annoying since you just dont know when you have to save. Though most of the time i have to reboot (which takes ages), its the same. Specs (gforce aswell):
GForce 4MX (81.85
Pentium 1.1Ghz
1024 MBRAM
WinXPSP1
So this is to me a clear Gforce issue.

Not true. I get random crashes as well with my Radeon X700.

I have only played LAN games so far (except the tutorial) with my brother and my friend and have found many problems. Among us we have 2 ATI and one nVidia card, and we all recieve errors. My brother (Radeon 9700) cannot click his minimap. Doing so crashes the game. Neither my brother nor my friend can access the military advisor. Instant crash for both, however I can pull mine up in .5 seconds and its fully functional. My diplomacy is instant, whereas they recieve lag before the leaderhead loads. And I get more CDTs than they do.

Completely random if you ask me.

had the same problem, i downloaded the nvidia BETA driver 81.87 and it seems to be solved.
Hoping for the best:)

Spoke to soon, it just chrashed:(

Clearly this is more a game issue than anything else, considering the amount of people who post here having problems.

I actually made a new clear installation of my Windows XP Professional with SP2, I added memory and now have 2GB RAM. My computer is an AMD 3200+ 2.2GHz with an Asus Nforce3 chipset motherboard and an Asus N6800 128MB graphics card.
I downloaded all the latest drivers from Asus to the motherboard and graphics card, and I still get errors and crashes. Updated my graphics card to the latest drivers from Nvidia 81.85 and still get the crashes and have to reboot my computer, at totally random.
I have tried all suggestions in this forum so far and reinstalled my computer twise now.
I can garantie that my computer is totaly free from any malicious code or utilities, becuase it is not even on the internet or connected to my LAN at home.
I downloaded all files on my USB stick and installed all drivers and programs from there. I have managed to play Rome Total War for a few hours last night and I also ran 3D mark 03/05 last night for a little over two hours without any trouble.

Clearly there has to be a patch soon to play the game.

Currently the game crashes between 5-60min of gametime.

All my problems are solved thx to the info about the beta driver 81.87 forceware.

The game rocks :) thx for the info Telerian, take care

And hope this solves your problems Zavarik

Bata drivers did no good for me, same thing, still get random crashes that reboot my computer.

Tried to play Greek worls as the Romans, the game freezed up un me after about 5 minutes of gameplay, this are beginning to get verry annoying...

Same here, intro movies (like the wonder movies) still dont work properly, and the game perfomance is still below what it should be. And it still crashes, ofcourse... I did get a few nice weird screens when starting up windows, but that was just the beta drivers...

Same problems here :/

Thought I solved the problems via disabling autosave in the config file. Worked fine playing all night last night (~4h) without a crash.

Today I started a new game, the crashes then retured. Are the crashes coupled to the game session some how?

/e

I really do think this is a directX compatibility problem... as I posted in my thread, my problems with lag and crashing were fixed, and the game runs perfectly by updating my motherboard chipset drivers... this affected directDraw and Direct3D

(I'm running an AMD 2800, 512 RAM, GeForce 6200)

hope this helps

I think that the people that pointed toward a Memory Leak as the problem are on the right track.

I myself have not seen any of these problems. Then again I have 2GB of Ram so maybe I am just lucky so far. Also I have not played a game from begining to end in one sitting or left the computer(and game) on all that time. I take breaks. Or Mrs Dood will divorce me. :D

Well im trying the 'chipset driver' thingy... hope it works..
EDIT: It didnt, i also tried the older Nvidia drivers, didnt help either.

Man is this depressing! We are all a bunch of beta testers now.

I salute you for the heroic system rebuild efforts.

The ATI fix instructions say to install DirectX9.0c BEFORE installing the video drivers. I don't know why that makes a difference, but that seems to be deliberate.

Also, somebody mentioned turning off the autosaves reduced crashes.

It DOES sound like some sort of memory leak, since it appears to be random.

For repeatability, You could create a game with just 2 players and save with preserve random seed, then just fortify your guys and count up turns until it crashes.

Hey All,

I just KNOW I'm dooming myself the second I THINK its all solved but I just want to back the folk talking about those 81.87 beta drivers seeming to solve their crashes as I've gone at least a few hours since installing them with no further CTDs. So I can't say I'm cured yet but I'm at least in remission at the moment.

I am trying the 81.87 Beta drivers now...

I will post here later tonight what has happened :)

Well still no crashes BUT it does seem a lot slower than the standard 81.85 drivers. I guess I'm willing to lose some speed and get a little jerky video to have a stable game although it would be nice to have the speed and stability at the same time, I guess.

I've tried using the 81.85 driver AND the 81.87 beta driver and still seem to get a CTD every 2 or 3 turns.

When I first started playing the game things were fine, but as the game progressed the CTD issues got worse and worse. I've played probably 175 to 200 turns of a present game where it used to crash randomly every few hours or so. Now it crashes every 2 or 3 turns.

It is extremely frustrating.

MY system:

Windows XP Service Pack 2
Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.20GHz
1022MB RAM
NVIDIA GeForce FX 5950 Ultra
