Game crashes on launch

First of all, I loved "Age of Ice". I think that I actually played that mod more than all the others combined, and "Beyond The Sword" itself. So when I learned that there was a "Fall From Heaven" TWO, well! I just about pooped with glee. So I set about downloading it and installing it. It's all set up. All installed. I load the mod, go through the set-up, hit "Launch" and... The game crashes.

All right, problem. So I go to the website, poke around, see if I can find the problem. Hmm... Looks like it requires the most recent patch of Civ IV. All right, I can deal with that. I download the patch and install it. All right. We're ready to go. I load up the mod, go through the set-up, hit "Launch" and... the game crashes again.

Well, obviously, I need to do some more poking around. I look at the website, and discover that there's a patch. And that some people have accidentally loaded the patch instead of the mod itself. All right. Not taking any chances this time. I download the patch, and the mod for a second time. I install the mod. I install the patch. I load up the mod and go to launch the game and... it crashes again.

Now, once is a fluke, twice is a coincidence, but three times is a pattern. So obviously, I'm doing something wrong. I can't think what I've done wrong, so I'm trusting that someone else will know. And with that in mind, I ask the community: What am I doing wrong? Any help would definitely be appreciated.

Well, I have a thread to help you through the installation process, so check that out (linked in sig). Barring that... explain a bit more about precisely when/where you crash please


I am assuming you sit through the loading of the Mod, see the main menu, choose Single Player, then either Play Now or Custom Game, set up your game, hit Play.... then it loads for a while, and when it finishes loading crashes instead of starting the game? (Fiarly common for that to happen, and I have quite a bit on how to fix it in the other thread I believe) Or is it at some other point?

That I did. The screen that's used to change your civilization's name, your name, et cetera, disappears, the splash page of the demon stays on-screen for a few seconds, then the screen goes black and I'm told that the game has encountered a problem and needs to close.

I'm reading through the installation thread right now. I'll try the other things in there when I get home, and if all else fails, I'll just uninstall the mod and patch, and try it again.

I've followed the proper installation guide, but I still keep getting crashes. I get to to see 'Age of Ice', as the beginning scene of the intro movie, but then it crashes. I have the latest BTS patch, and I tried reinstalling about three times now.

Please help, I loved FFH2 before I quit it (because it was being continued for BTS and I didn't have it back then), and I'd love to try it again.

Well, if you are getting to see some of the movie, but not all of it, then the movie might be your problem. Try this thread and see if it helps.

We usually see that error if you don't have BtS patch 3.13 installed.

Hm, I disabled the movie, now I can start tiny and duel maps, but huge maps crash. I haven't tried the other sizes yet. And after one turn in the tiny map, I got a CTD again.

Anyone got an idea on how to fix this?

Hmm.. It seems like BTS crashes past the first turn aswel.. Civ4 runs fine though. The technical support thread for Civ4 had some posts about this aswlel, though none are answered. Any idea anyone?

If not even BtS works I would suspect a corrupt install, so all I can suggest is you uninstall BtS and start from scratch. I highly reccomend that you use the 3.13 patch hosted on this site rather than the one the game will try to download automatically.
