Game crashing in Huge World play

I'm a Civiliation novice.

For the last six months, I have been running a legit version of Civilization on my laptop (Windows ME) with no problems until I started playing the huge map. I am using version 1.07f.

When I get to 2177 A.D., the game won't go any further. It will open in that year, but when I attempt to turn, it crashes.

I tried saving the game to my more powerful desktop but got the same result. (I'm running Windows 2000 on my desktop).

Both computers have 512 MB of Ram.

When it crashes I get the following error messages:

DATA IO Operation
System Error: Cult

System Error: ESPN

System Error: ESPN

System Error: LEAD

then

PROGRAM ERROR
and the game closes.

I'd like to keep playing this game (since I've been playing it for weeks). Does anybody have any idea of how to fix it?

Do you have a savegame you could post? I would like to check it out.
