Game crashing when I launch

I've been playing civ V with no problems recently including after the patch, but I recently had to re-download Steam. (It was re-downloading the whole Portal 2 game, instead of just a patch for it, so I tried the steps Steam recommends, including re-downloading and installing Steam, none of which worked by the way. I ended up just having to re-download the whole thing.)

So anyway, I now try to start up Civ V and it starts up, and then exits automatically just seconds later. It's usually just after the 2K games screen, but I have made it to the Gamespy screen before.

Does anyone know what my problem is and how to fix it? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm really quite annoyed that I'm forced to use Steam after the amount of annoying problems I've had with it :-(

Have you tried disabling the intro video?

In usersettings.ini under MyGames folder Civ5, look for Skipintrovideo, change it to 1. If the intro video is the problem this should fix it.

Many things change between patches, if the problem is still there try checking the cache.
