Game Freezes On AI's Turn

Mostly these freezes are AI pathfinding errors when moving units. Another possibility could be the 'houseboat bug'. In one case during the development of SOE we had a freeze caused by a wrong configured unit.

You can watch the AI moves when playing in Debug Mode or playing a normal game by switching civs with the multiplayer tool or stealing the military plans of other civs and watching their moves.
 
I did test in debug mode but the freezeing times were in different eras and seem to be after an AI builds a city
 
If not Steam-related, then are you perhaps playing with one of the (hacked) "No City Limits" .exe files?

With the maximum 31 Civs on a Large-Huge map, the (Firaxis-coded) city-limit of 512 cities will be reached once everyone has founded about 16-17 cities (on average), which at higher difficulty levels could easily happen by the mid-game. IIRC from the related threads, the AI will then stop founding towns, but if the human continues to found additional towns, there is also a corresponding increase in the game's tendency to crash.
 
Just ran through it with Steph's editor and found a few units which could cause problems, in two rough groups. I don't know if any of these are what are causing your problem right now, though.

Group A

This group consists of offensive/defensive land units with the IMMOBILE flag, which can load onto ships. This causes the game to hang if the AI tries to disembark these units from a ship onto a land tile.

To Fix - Give it a Transport Capacity of 1 or more. Give it all three of the "Transports only Foot Units", "Transports Only Air Units" and "Transports only Tactical Missiles" flags (this will mean that it can't load onto transports and no other unit can actually load onto it)


  • Orthanc Fortification - IMMOBILE defense unit.
  • Dwarven Tower - same as above
  • Elven Tower - same as above
  • Watch Tower - same as above
  • Guard Tower - same as above
  • Orc Tower - same as above
  • Fortress Tower - same as above
  • Citadel Tower - same as above
  • Mine Tower - same as above
  • Dwarven Lone Tower - IMMOBILE offense unit. Same as above.

Group B

This group consists of offensive/defensive land units without an AI strategy. This could cause a problem (either the game to hang or a crash to desktop) if you or the AI found a city and it cannot build any other land military units.

To Fix - give it the Offense or Defense AI Strategy flag as required.


  • Guldur Necromancer - no AI strategy, if this is the only unit available for Dol Guldur to build in a city this may cause a crash.
  • Giant Squid* - same as above.
  • Umbar Greatsword - same as above, albeit this is unlikely the cause of your problems since it requires resources.
  • Skin Changer Elemental - same as above, albeit this is unlikely the cause of your problems since it requires resources.

*(also of note, this unit is set to land though by the name and tech it appears to be a sea unit?)

Are you using Steph's Civ 3 Expanded Editor?

Could I ask you to expand on this?

Can the AI load (immobile) land-units onto Sea (and Air?) transports, even if those land-units don't have the 'Load' action-flag?

Or is it that you can't actually set the Off/Def AI-strategies for any (land) unit unless the "Load" flag is (also) checked?

In the default editor, all units need to be able to load (and capture) to have the offense and defense AI strategies.

With the updated Biq units, the freezing on AI's turn still persists
 
It now freezes at the beginning of my turn after I unlock a science and research a new one and all of my cities finish their current production queues.
