Who will it be? You decide. You, and about another hundred-thousand voters (like me). Contest begins at the beginning of April, with a matchup between the classic NES games Super Mario Bros 3 and Metal Gear. Through 63 matches, and 64 games, one will emerge victorious.

Until then, any current GameFAQs members (or those thinking of registering) can fill out their brackets predicting the winners of each matchup. Why? For fun I guess. If you win you get a bunch of stuff from EBgames (sponsor of the contest I believe) and whatnot. I'm currently in the process of filling my own bracket as well, only about half-way done, trying to predict winners in matches such as Metroid Prime vs. Wind Waker, and Kingdom Hearts vs. whoever comes out there. I'm struggling between popularity and favorites, such as the FFTA and Fire Emblem match, where I'm putting FFTA in the bracket but rooting for Fire Emblem all the way through. I don't know, a lot of matches are just way too close to call.

A very simplified version of the bracket of non-GameFAQs members (only showing first round):

Division 8:
Super Mario Bros 3 vs. Metal Gear
Metroid vs. Pac-Man
Phantasy Star vs. Contra
Final Fantasy vs. Pitfall
Donkey Kong vs. Duck Hunt
Legend of Zelda vs. Adventure
Pong vs. River City Ransom
Tetris vs. Galaga

Divison 16:
Chrono Trigger vs. Secret of Mana
Super Mario RPG vs. Street Fighter II
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 vs. Shining Force
Super Mario World vs. The Simpsons
The Legend of Zelda: Link to the Past vs. Gunstar Heroes
Super Metroid vs. Phantasy Star IV
Earthbound vs. Doom
Final Fantasy III (VI) vs. Mortal Kombat

Division 32-64:
Final Fantasy VII vs. Suikoden II
Pokemon Gold/Silver/Crystal vs. Xenogears
Final Fantasy Tactics vs. Dance Dance Revolution
Metal Gear Solid vs. Resident Evil
Perfect Dark vs. Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
Goldeneye vs. Panzer Dragoon Saga
Super Mario 64 vs. NiGHTS into dreams...
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time vs. Fallout 2

Division 128:
Halo vs. Starcraft
Soul Calibur vs. Kingdom Hearts
Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker vs. Skies of Arcadia
Metroid Prime vs. Half-Life
Final Fanasy Tactics Advance vs. Fire Emblem
Final Fantasy X vs. Shenmue
Grand Theft Auto: Vice City vs. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
Super Smash Bros Melee vs. Metal Gear Solid 2

Hard to visualize, I know, but whatever. Also note that GameFAQs is very console heavy, which is why there are so few PC games (Starcraft was only a 16 seed). Also, the most noteworthy limit was one game/sequel per generation, so there's only FFVII instead of VIII, Super Mario Bros 3 instead of Super Mario Bros, and etc. Finally, there are a lot of Square fans there, and quite a few Nintendo fans, but not too many Xbox fans.

And yes, I did finally join GameFAQs after a year of lurking, in case anyone was wondering. :p

Being a very latecomer to console gaming, I can't really make a judgement on most of the earlier games. :hmm:

Interesting...

I'd vote in this if not for my ip ban.

Really? I always assumed you were into games since at least the PSOne generation... when and what got you into console gaming then?

Perhaps you don't know the definition of "late-comer", it means to come late.

The PS2. :ack: Only from about early 2001.

Ripping off GameSpy is a sad thing. :p

GameFAQs had this contest planned well ahead of time before Gamespy released their contest. And, technically Gamespy ripped off GameFAQs' Character Battle tournaments which have started since 2002. And likely both will receive a call from the NCAA soon for ripping off their bracket system. :p

Besides, Gamespy sucks. :p

My most profound apologies for an ignorant statement. And I know GameSpy sucks; that's what I was trying to get at. ;)

Don't worry about it, plenty of people have asked the admin there about it. It was he who said that NCAA tournament thing. ;)

I have my temporary bracket done, but I'm going to make a bunch of revisions here and there. It's way too Nintendo heavy, my Final Four is Mario 3, Chrono Trigger, Zelda: OoT, and SSBM. I honestly have no clue over FFX vs. SSBM, whichever one wins will most likely be the winner of the 128 division. I have Zelda OoT beating FFVII as I'm counting on anti-votes because Cloud and Sephiroth swept the contest last year (the contest before that had Link and Mario as finalists). Yeah, I'm probably going to change a lot of things though.

Psst, put Myst in there. :mischief:

Care to elaborate?

How can it possibly win, Halo and FFVII are in it. This only serves to remind me of how much I hate the Gamefaqs fanboys. (I mainly hung around Next-Gen to make fun of them)

Oh yeah, forgot Halo. FF7 fans are stirred now, because of the up-coming movie, you're probably right.

I have Vice City losing to SSBM. In fact, I think it will have a hard time beating Star Wars: KotR.

Tommy Vercetti did awful in last year's Character Battle 2003 contest, barely beating out DK. At one point, Vercetti only led by ONE vote. That's what I call a close match. Later Vercetti won by a few hundred, but it's still extremely close. DK is nowhere near the most popular Nintendo characters, while most GTA fanboys love the trash-talkin' Vercetti. That's why I have SSBM over Vice City.

I also have Starcraft over Halo, because there is so much Xbox hate on GameFAQs, even though it is console heavy. Master Chef (main guy of Halo) barely beat some no-name character from Golden Sun. I know Master Chef doesn't entirely represent Halo, but still... it will be a close match, but I put Starcraft over it because I like Starcraft better.

I truly hope FFVII doesn't win the contest again.

Wow you mean they've had more of these things in the past. (I got ip banned two days after the Mario Link showdown in the first character battle)

There was a second one last year. Cloud and Sephiroth won it. Mario pulled another astounding win against Chrono. This time, Chrono was in the lead the whole time, and the Mario fanboys were admiting defeat everywhere, displaying a high level of maturity in the process. Then, about an hour before, Mario all of a sudden began to slice Chrono's lead. The difference was too small, everyone said, but Mario kept slicing, and gaining, and on the last update... he lost. But all of a sudden, there was another update, even after 24 hours in, in which Mario had taken the lead. No one knew what happened, until Cjayc himself (admin) stepped in and said he let it run a little overtime to check to make sure there weren't any cheaters like last contest. I didn't see any of this, I went to bed thinking Chrono won, and when I checked up the next day, I was suprised by seing Mario as the winner.

Anyway, after that, things started quiting down, Cloud beat Link, Sephiroth beat Mario, and I think the pictures might have something to do with it (Link was cel-shaded and Mario had the waterpack), and also there were a lot of anti-votes since Mario and Link won it last time. That's why I really don't want FFVII to win this contest, since they already swept it last year.
