I can put up with metro but the minute M$ does that is the day I kick windows out the door.

You and me both; fortunately there's no real risk of that happening.

I loath Metro, and the rumors Microsoft might try to phase out the desktop interface has me VERY worried. Unlike you I have no tolerance for the Metro UI at all. Just looking at me makes me angry.

Good thing you don't have to use Metro in Windows 8.

My thoughts exactly. Unlike Metro though, Microsoft Bob was not forced on people like Metro has been. Everyone who refuses to buy Windows 8 PCs in favor of Windows 7 PCs will be helping send a message to Microsoft we don't want a Smart Phone/Tablet OS on our PCs. We need to fight back.

Microsoft only sells Windows 8 licenses, if you're buying Windows 7 PCs it's either old stock, or licenses that the OEM downgraded.

The only way you can fight back is by not using Windows at all.

Well I'll use 3rd party software to bring my start menu back on my non-touch desktop.

Now, the only problem with that is you'll ridicule anyone who opts for a start menu. You'll say they are hicks, backwards and stupid just because you don't like what they like. Why can't you let it be, for some users the start menu is actually more productive to have then the start metro menu?

I like the start menu because I can type in a program name and it comes up, though sometimes I mistype it and a search window comes up instead which is a pain. The disadvantage is that my memory's kind of shot so I often forget program names but it helps to keep the start menu organized into subfolders of categories.

Windows 8 Start Screen works the same way.

Yes and no. For example, if you type 'gimp' into the start screen on a windows 8 it will launch gimp and it will always be the gimp you wanted because there is only 1. But if you type 'paint' into the start screen Windows 8 will launch the (almost useless) metro paint, not the desktop paint. This is where windows 8 fails when comparing it to Launchy or similar launchers.

I do use Launchy and I like it alot but sometimes I forget the name of a program I installed. For me, it's easier to look through the start menu where all the programs are neatly organized in folders bearing descriptive names compared to spelunking through (potentially hundreds) of, unnecessarily large, start screen shortcuts under the "all apps" heading.

However, I would say 75% of the time I use shortcuts pinned to my taskbar or desktop.

Er, no? If you type "Paint" and then click or key down to launch the desktop version of Paint, after you do this a few times start will remember your selection, and in the future typing "paint" will select the desktop paint as the first option.

If you want to do your thing you can just rename the shortcut to "dpaint" or whatever, and then typing "dpaint" will launch it.

So, pretty much the same behavior I observed from the Start Menu? (if I use a program muchly, it'll come up to the top when I type the first few letters)

Yeah, me too. I'll probably not put it on my current laptop as it's getting old and will probably be replaced in the next year or two, but I'm looking forward to putting it on the desktop I plan to build later this year.
