Gaming Laptops

There are currently 2457 (more or less, depending on region) games in the Windows Store which aren't available pre-Windows 8/RT.

And what studies are you basing that on? Backwards compatibility with 2 or 3 previous gen operating systems has always been a concern of developers. As a matter of fact many games released today are still compatible with XP SP3. Besides, the game(singular, not plural) you linked to will also be released on windows smartphones, which speaks volumes about it....

I don't see what volumes that speaks about it?

How many of those are unavailable on my smartphone, though? Are there games exclusive to the Windows Store, or are they mainly ports from Google Play and the App Store?

And I wasn't really talking about Angry Birds, but I think you know that. :p

My guess is several hundred exclusive to the Windows Store. It's not particularly relevant though - the point of the matter is that a Windows 8 PC is the only way you get the full set of available games on a desktop - any other platform, Linux, Mac OS or Windows 7, is only going to get some subset of what Windows 8 has available.

Gabe Newell is full of hot air, Valve can't compete in consoles, Windows 8 users already vastly outnumber Mac OS users on Steam, and Steam on Linux is going to fail hard.

If I get a new computer, I'd prefer Windows 8 anyways. I'm not one of the whiners.

While I generally agree with those points, my point was that I highly doubt Steam would willingly ditch Windows 7 compatibility in favor of Windows 8.

(Although, to nitpick, the Steam Box is really a PC gaming competitor, although it's ultimate success depends on many unknowns.)

This. No-one is going to make a game that is available for Windows 7 but not 8.
People are going to make games which are not for 7, see my earlier link. They have an interesting concept, where you can play the same save on your Xbox, Windows Phone and Windows 8. This is probably more difficult to also implement for 7. If this concept takes of, it could make Windows 8 a lot more interesting.

You are missing my point entirely, I was saying that, in general, mainstream game devs provide backwards compatibility support for older operating systems in their games.

If you're seriously considering Windows 7, I assume you're not interested in the Windows Store ecosystem and platform innovations. In that context:

Windows 8 wins on performance, uses more modern technical standards (relevant for gaming) and has a few usability advantages (better search integration).
Windows 7 has more consistent design: UI elements shared between Windows 8 desktop and tablety interface are styled to fit the latter.
Some people also prefer Seven's bling (8 abandoned gratuitous glass and shadows to fit in better with the signage/typography inspired tablety interface).

I'd definitely pick Windows 8. Windows 7 isn't pretty enough to choose it exclusively on style, least of all on a gaming computer.

They might. They might not. Either way, Windows 8 is at least as good for you as Windows 7.

Of course, it probably works fine, but still. ;)
Meh, seems to be an issue of using older hardware for which some drivers are not (yet) available. Shouldn't be an issue with a new computer.

Game developers are not very happy about Windows 8 because it looks like Microsoft is moving into the closed eco system that Apple provides. So no problem on compatibility, especially if a possible Windows 9 won't allow non-market apps.

I can put up with metro but the minute M$ does that is the day I kick windows out the door.

That would also probably kill their business market though, since many business need specialised software and many will not want to put this through the Windows Market. So I'm sceptical about this plan.

I loath Metro, and the rumors Microsoft might try to phase out the desktop interface has me VERY worried. Unlike you I have no tolerance for the Metro UI at all. Just looking at me makes me angry.

Looking at metro makes me think of the windows that has a living room look to it. It failed horribly, I think it came slightly before windows 95. My first PC was a Windows 95 so whatever the one I'm trying to think of was, it's before my time but I did see pictures of it. ;)

I really don't mind metro on a touch deviece but I can't stand the informal slap in the face M$ dealt to it's desktop userbase. Most of us don't want or have a 25" touch screen and yet nothing was done by M$ so we could choose what worked better for us personally. It was either M$'s way or the 3rd party software way.

The childish appearance of the metro UI insults my intelligence, it's almost as if Microsoft thinks we are all autistic. Then they had the stones to come out and call their new look "modern". That way all the "cool" and "opened minded" change loving users would upgrade to it. Because they need to keep their hip and trendy status. Heaven forbid they use something which is out of fashion. Honestly, grow a brain and learn to think for yourself...

All that aside, it's actually a good touch UI, I won't argue with that. :p

It still sucks if you have no interest in a touch based system. The start screen to me is clunky and unwieldy. Why does it have to take up a whole screen? It makes no sense to me. I sure hope this is not the new direction Windows is going, it could drive me to Mac or Linux.

I find the side scrolling start screen in metro very unintuitive. Once again, additional options form Microsoft would be much appreciated.

Thanks for the link aimeeandbeatles, that's what I was thinking of. :)

My thoughts exactly. Unlike Metro though, Microsoft Bob was not forced on people like Metro has been. Everyone who refuses to buy Windows 8 PCs in favor of Windows 7 PCs will be helping send a message to Microsoft we don't want a Smart Phone/Tablet OS on our PCs. We need to fight back.
