I am a sad type of player that plays just one nation (English, usually Elizabeth) but recently on a multiplayer I chose Gandhi and I wiped the floor with my opponents!

Since then I have chosen Gandhi and his traits really suit my style!

Has anyone else come across this?

Yeah, I do like Gandhi. But I haven't played enough games, or enough leaders to decide if he's the best or not. It's that fast worker - I suspect that it might be an unbalanced advantage. Most UU are useful, but only for a short time. For me, sometimes they are game-winning, but more often I hardly end up using them at all because I'm not at war during that time. The fast worker is different. It's useful all the time, in every game, without fail. It won't win a war, but you can rely on it giving you an edge throughout the whole game. On the other hand, those workers are all that much more powerful than a regular worker.

Good UU and very potent trait combo in Spi/Ind. Yeah, Gandhi is one of my favourites.

I played Gandhi in my first game on Monarch and, much to my surprise, won. I was lucky though, I started on a rather large island with no one to bother me at all, while my rivals were fighting it out on the main continent.

yea, i have a similar problem as you, i only play as one nation. but for me its india (ghandi) :)
hes really good. i tried asoka, but i dont like him very much.
organized << industrial
i havent tried multiplayer yet, my comp is barely good enough to play the single game.
i guess i should try other nations.... :s

The best game I've had so far was a Prince difficulty LAN game (2 players, 6 AI) where I was on a large continent myself and I was miles ahead of everyone in tech all game. In Civ3, starting on your own island used to be a surefire way to fall dramatically behind in tech, but I think it's the opposite in Civ4.

Gandhi is pretty much my favorite for builder games. Those fast workers are great for building infrastructure in the critical early stages of the game.

I prefer Saladin so far. The leader traits seem to fit my style of play.

For relatively peaceful games, Ghandi is right up there with Qin or Elizabeth. If you've got somebody aggressive on your border, it is pretty easy to get wiped out early on, though.

I tried Gandhi and liked it but I will continue to stick with my fav Saladin.

I play a variety of leaders since I like variety and trying out different trait combos. For my style it's nice if a leader starts with mining though (I'm a chopaholic).

I'm actually playing as Gandhi in my current game and doing extremely well, but a large part of that is because I started on a nice sized continent with one other AI who got the royal shaft. The Incas started completely blocked off from the bulk of the continent by a mountain range (first time I've seen it to this degree) such that they're pinned with about 2 nice cities and 3 junk cities that are largely ice and tundra (and I made sure to build some cities early on to "claim" the water at both ends of the mountain range so they couldn't sail and settle MY extensive and fertile lands). I couldn't do open borders with them but the tradeoff is a huge empire developed without conflict.

I always conquer Ghandi when given the opportunity.... See, Ghandi and I have come to realize something. I rule, and he sucks. So he builds good infrastructure for his cities for me to conquer which greatly boost me. It's teamwork, albeit an odd form of teamwork.

I'm a Ghandi fan too, but obviously if you are being peaceful. First of all, he starts with IMO the two best starting techs. He can grab a religion very quickly and easily and forget about it and he can also grab bronze working very early for the chop rush. Industrious is nice and spiritual is also sometimes nice. Obviously the fast worker is the best UU if you never plan on war, but I dont find its advantages unbalanced. It means that you sometimes get a one turn headstart on an improvement, which is nice but not game breaking. I prefer Saladin for a straight cultural victory, however because I think great people strategies done properly are amazing. To me, it's tough to play without one of philosophical or financial.

I, being pacifist of pacifists (except in Civics), am currently playing my first game (my comp is slow, and I don't have a lot of time anyway) as Gandhi. IT IS AWESOME. Unfortunately, I got landed with Liz (but not Qin!) on the other end of my continent, which means that I am eternally in second place technologically. Of course, I have an excuse--Saladin converted to Judaism, and since he was on my eastern border and had a big army, I followed suit, in the hopes it would keep the peace. It worked; he actually served as a buffer against other states. (it was no biggie for me to convert to Judaism, by the way--I had founded both Hinduism and Judaism at this time, and both were practiced in most of my cities that practiced any religion at all).

It amazes me how many people mis-spell Gandhi even though it's in the thread title.

Whilst the fast workers are great, I can't help but see Spiritual as a wasted trait. Maybe I should give him another go.

The fast worker is the best unit in the game. It remains useful until Fusion. I think the inclusion of this unit changes Ghandi from a potentially louziest leader to the best.
