Gator02 - Learning to Walk

:bump:

Any progress, Brad, sir?

Sorry for the delay. My sick days put me a bit behind on everything, and now I have another issue. My mom (who lives in Mobile, Alabama) is very sick, and I plan to travel home tomorrow. I will be out of touch without civ access, and likely without internet access, for around 2 weeks.

I will try to finish my turns today, but If I don't have the time I may have to hand off to one of you guys. :(

My goodness! Please don't worry about a game when serious things in real life need attention. We would be more than happy to assist you in any way we can.

We wish you the best and will say a prayer for your Mom. Good luck Brad.

Humble apologies for a bump during a stretch of bad news. Sorry to hear about Mom. Hope you find all in order when you get to Mobile.

Wow, thanks a million guys: especially for the prayers. Mom is fighting with cancer right now, and I can't tell you how much each prayer is appreciated!

My travel plans have changed to Sunday because my fiance is now going home with me as well. That being the case, I would like to finish my turns today. Also, I will probably be out of town for around 2 weeks, so you guys might want to start game 2 without me.

I plan to play my turns without applying the patch, but if the next up wants to apply it that is fine with me.

That patch made some significant changes! Overall, I think I am going to like how they decreased chopping power and tied a chop boost to mathematics. It will hopefully lead to more variety in opening strategies. I also like some of the Civic cost changes (Nationhood is now cheaper, State Property and Slavery more expensive), but I'm not sure what motivated a few civics changes. It is kind of funny that they reversed the change they made to slavery in the previous patch (was Low Maintenance, then None, now back to Low). The changes to Hereditary Rule and Representation are questionable: I think they were trying to weaken Representation because it was being overused via the pyramids, but it has been weakened a bit much in comparison to Hereditary Rule. Now HR seems a little too attractive, and I doubt Representation will be utilized very often. I certainly won't be going out of my way for the pyramids anymore. I don't like the change to Free Market (now more expensive). I doubt the small economic boost of Free Market will justify the turn of anarchy now, considering Communism/State Property is right around the corner.

Free Market still likely maximizes revenues. If you can defray the costs, it still makes sense for maintaining a tech lead, especially on water maps.

Hey guys. Mom has some new issues and was just moved to ICU, so I'm not feeling very focused (as I like to be when I play an SG or GOTM). So I guess I will leave the game in your capable hands. I'm taking a computer with me so I will probably be able to check in from time to time. Good luck! And pick something interesting for our next game!

On to Beijing!!!

Got it and off like a herd of turtles.

Turn 220 (1550 AD)

1550_00.jpg

1550_01.jpg

Rheims will fall!

Set up a track to Beijing for the fleet then decide to pull the galleons back to home port and send a fleet instead of a few. The track is marked from Huamnaga west by north to the landing in a forest outside Beijing

1550_02.jpg

More cannon fodder or is that ChoNoKo Chew
Marseilles begins: Catapult
Marseilles begins: Catapult
Delhi begins: Maceman
Delhi begins: Maceman
Teotihuacan begins: Grenadier
Teotihuacan begins: Grenadier

Tlaxcala begins: Catapult
Tenochtitlan finishes: Knight

Worker loses to: French Musketeer (9.00/9)

Turn 221 (1555 AD)
This is too funny for words. Nappy sends his sole Musketeer from Rheims and captures a couple of slaves at Lyons. :rotfl:
1555_00.jpg

He leaves a pike and two longbows to face the Squads of Death at Rheims.

And in we go and down he goes
Catapult loses to: French Longbowman (6.00/6)
Catapult loses to: French Longbowman (4.44/6)
Two city raider cats peel back the defenders at Rheims and a third unpromoted one does a little more damage to <5 longbows and the pike, so he gets his promotion.
Grenadier defeats (1.20/12): French Longbowman
Grenadier defeats (9.84/12): French Longbowman
Grenadier defeats (9.60/12): French Pikeman

Captured Rheims (Napoleon)
And that was that for the Little Corporal

Now to redistribute the forces for Mao.

Turn 222 (1560 AD)
Cannon will be a major advantage against the Chinese so turn up the bunsen burners for steel in 2

Turn 223 (1565 AD)

It is go time....

March on Baoding
1560_00.jpg

And Ningbo
1560_01.jpg

And Shanghai. Frigates pour fire into Shangahi
1560_02.jpg

The two western cities should go down next turn, The troops converging at Shanghai are trying to force a meeting on the plains by occupying the high ground Kaifeng is the most weakly defended (2 LB and a pike) and so can be ignored for now.
1570_00.jpg

Tech learned: Steel Our income allows the upgrade of one catapult per turn

Grenadier defeats (1.20/12): Chinese Longbowman
Grenadier defeats (12.00/12): Chinese Longbowman
Grenadier defeats (4.32/12): Chinese Cho-Ko-Nu

Mao made a small tactical error here. All the troops that received a terrain defense bonus were weaker than his knghts, so the knights killed the catapults but the collateral damage finished the others.

1575_02.jpg

And that was that for the active defense of Shanghai.
Grenadier defeats (9.84/12): Chinese Knight
Grenadier defeats (7.92/12): Chinese Maceman

After the successful battles at the three interlopers start a march on Kaifeng, very weakly defended but on a hill with fairly strong cultural defenses.

Turn 230 (1600 AD)
The move on Beijing-a force moving NW from Shanghai into the forests to the SW of Beijing. Two full galleon loads offshore at Utah Beach. Land, let them cover an advance due north from Shanghai, then attack when ready Gridley

1600_00.jpg

There is one full galleon SE of Shanghai and another empty on its way in. Use those boats to land at Utah on the turn the first landing moves into Seige Point.

The move on Harappan, from the NW and SE. (The view is rotated) Coming at it from NW and SE.

1600_01.jpg

A diversion at Chicago. Mao has been sending singletons towards the far NE out of Guanghzhou and Nanking. This group is tasked to hold the high ground east of the border and force a battle of attrition up there.

1600_02.jpg

Three more turns and Beijing would have been in our hands. Mao wasted most of his strongest troops at trying to break the Jaws of Death between Washington and Shanghai....

A walk in the park this was, though the logistics were a little tricky. Gator should be set up nicely though. The artist is almost to Marseilles, on go to order, so planting him in a newly taken Chinese town in the center of the remaining lands should push us over the top after Beijing goes down.

Looking Good Bede! :goodjob:

Nice setup with the valley of death!! Looks like the AI is a little impatient..

Gator will be happy we left him some fun... ;) :mischief: :D

:wavey: Hi all, I'm back. Had a great time, except for the rain the day we went into NYC. I'll try to get caught up later tonight and should be able to play tomorrow night.

@Brad, sorry to hear about your mom. Take care of her and yourself. We'll be praying for you also.

Brad, don't ever play an SG with LK; I don't think he'd survive the stress. On the other hand, if you played with Romeo, I could see you two attempting to conquer the world with a single warrior. :crazyeye:
Maybe I should play a game with Brad and try this. We can name our Warrior Jet Li, give him Martial Arts 3, Rope fighting 2 and visual effects 4. Although none of that would be worth anything until Hollywood was built.
My assertation to life is, "If Brute Force isn't enough, you aren't using enough brute force." (At least Bez's take on it is)

Due to Job and Family situations (I would like to see at least my first anniversery) I don't play civ that much, but Whenever I can leverage 75%+ odds for taking at least 3 cities, I attack.

I figure that while it may hurt me, It sure hurts the other guy worse.

There are some very interesting points raised in this game, and BF's style is very akin to mine, although more conservative on the combat, and he actually does the math. (After doing math all day at work, err supposedly doing math all day at work instead of reading CFC, I want my fun time to be math free). I would imagine that stacking Greebley, BF, myself and possibly another warmonger would be a very interesting SGOTM for c4. If SGOTM ever makes it to c4. Anyway, enough rambling for now.

Welcome back Gator. Glad to see you survived the northern climates. It was really quite warm while you were up here though, must have brought it with you!! ;) :D :p Too bad you took it home too... :mischief:

OK, getting caught back up at work took a little longer than I expected. But I'm finally ready to play. I'll start tonight. Sorry for the delay.
