GDC: Scalable performance (in Civ V)

Actually, it sounds like it could run in a virtualized environment -- Win XP on VirtualBox on OS X for example. That would go a long, long way towards my willingness to buy a Windows version, now that is seems more and more that there will not be a native Mac variant, just some port sometime. Very well done.

Consider also that its typical for Steam games to give you access to all (non-console) versions, so if you buy the PC version now, chances are that you'll get access to the Mac version for free when/if it comes out.

According to info on the Steam website, this only goes for Steam games. For non-Steam games (such as Civilization) it depends on the publisher whether the Mac version is included for free when it becomes available.

Do you mean Valve vs non-valve games, or Steam DRM games vs just Steam downloadable game? ie Civ4 which you can buy from steam vs Civ5 which is Steam controlled.

He means games not made by Steam, Civ is made by Frix/2k so its thier choice whether or not to release the mac version for free to existing customers.

Yes, sorry for confusing Steam and Valve here. I tried to find the reference, but cannot seem to locate it just yet. When Mac was added, Valve gave all owners of a Windows license access to the Mac version without extra charge, but this doesn't necessarily apply to games of other publishers that are sold through Steam.

Edit: It was based on Grey2Ham's post, who got it from the Wikipedia page on Steam, which in turn refers to an article on Shacknews.

Well civ 4 gives free mac versions, thats not to say civ5 defintely will, but its more likely that civ5 will now than if civ4 didnt give them either.

We will see.
