GDC: Scalable performance (in Civ V)

Well you cant go by that, sorry! Mine says dx11 also, but it is not a dx11 card. It only supports dx10. If you want to be 100% sure that it can run dx11 games your going to have to google the exact model of graphics you have, or the computer name, and see if it supports dx11, or try running a game in dx11 mode(maybe a dx11 demo if there is one out there?). Though you can install dx11 it seems, it doesnt mean you can run a game in dx11. Thats my best guess., because like I said I have a gtx275, and it is only dx10 capable :(

Oh, haha! Your right. Mine is Directx 10 too. What does that mean? What does that change?

Nothing really, that we'll notice! If you google dx11 and read about it, it just has some new features, like tessallation. Basicly makes things look better. Also new code and stuff, thats the stuff we benefit from(new code, removal of useless code). We cant use features our cards arent designed for, but we can benefit from dx11 in other ways. Nothing to really worry about, imo.

Actually the DirectX 11 version will improve Performance even for DX10 and 9 users thanks to its threaded design.

Wonderful! How well did your computer run Civ 4 bts?

EDIT: to Tylerryan79

Pretty much the same from my old card graphics wise, just because the graphics arent anything special. I built a new pc, and my new cpu really showed the differance, but theres still the late game lag regardless, only instead of many seconds its only a few.... never did time it. It also depends on map sizes, civs etc. My graphics for fps and stuff improved in that I had much better fps at my native res for my moniter. I could always play games with everything on if I wanted to on my old card, just that it would look nice but jitter etc, unless I turned the res down. Now I can keep it cranked and at the native res for more detail! I also noticed the card really kicks into gear the higher the res, and at lower resolutions I think "Ya what was the point of this card again?" because theres no added improvement. The point of that being If you buy a new card but your monitor stinks, you wont notice a change, but if you have a good monitor with a high resolution you'll get the benefits of the card.

Ahh. Thats nice. I wish I could say that I will try it, but I cant. lol My games run very nice. Surprisingly the graphics in some of my newer games run better than the old ones. And I find it strange how everyone (including canyourunit.com) say I can't run these games, but I can. Canyourunit.com says I def shouldnt be able to play it, but its the smoothest game on my laptop. Very strange, I know. Im just wondering if thats how civ 5 will work, me being told I cant, but I can. Stupid computer...haha

RECOMMENDED

Windows XP with SP1 or higher
Intel Pentium 4 or AMD Athlon CPU with at least 1.8 GHz
512 MB RAM
128 MB graphics card with DirectX 8 support (pixel- and vertex shaders)
DirectX 7 compatible soundcard
DVD-ROM drive
1.7 GB free hard disk space

those are pretty low specs
Where'd you get this info?

Yeah I have learned not to believe people when they say the specs. I just got my computer geek friends to read the podcast 5 transcript and then told me what they thought. I was told I would be fine. Just ask your computer god friends what they think if you want to know if you could run it.

I know, my point was that Civ V would have much higher specs

Pentium 4 1.8 GHz was first released in mid 2001 and Civ4 was released in october 2005. So say we need something that was top of the line 4 years ago? Where does that bring us? What were the specs for a top of the line machine mid 2006?

I'm much more excited about the rendering engine being that much better. It sounds like there's a possibility that I can run the game at max graphics settings on my laptop!

Actually, it sounds like it could run in a virtualized environment -- Win XP on VirtualBox on OS X for example. That would go a long, long way towards my willingness to buy a Windows version, now that is seems more and more that there will not be a native Mac variant, just some port sometime. Very well done.

yeah for high quality graphics and all the extras. but for the game w/o all the flashy graphics just about any computer made in the past few years will work.

Ok. So for the recommended requirements, add 2 GB Ram. I suspect DirectX 10 is recommended so Windows Vista or 7, and the only thing we need to decide on is the graphics card, an area I don't know much about.

I doubt more than 2 GB will be needed for the 32-bit version actually. Also, I think directX 10 will be passed, as 9 is required but 11 is available for tesselation. So any directX 11 card will run civ 5, and probably any direct X9 card that ran civ 4 perfectly will run Civ 5 well (without directX 11 extras).

Thier is a screen shot somewhere comparing the game running in DX11 Graphic Cards and Integrated Graphics, and thiers basically no difference.

It looks like it will run well on lots of variations of machine which is a good thing, however if your PC is so old you have trouble loading and running note pad, you may suffer problems :P.

DX11 Vs Intergrated

All thats different is that the fog of war seems to be on in the intergrated and the water appears to have been dumbed down. (Water effects are generally quite graphically demanding) Still looking very good though.

if you have intergrated graphics it doesn't look like you will need to buy a new graphics card.

We will see.
