Hello! I have a few questions and hoping you all can help! My Civ background - I started playing Civ back in Civ III. I spent HOURS on the game and loved it (former Risk player so this was right up my ally!). I then for the most part did not play the game until CIV 6. Couldn't really get into the game. Decided to download Civ V11. Here are my questions and thoughts:
1. I originally downloaded the VR version for my Quest III. Has possibilities, but the game itself is too massive to really be enjoyed in VR at this time. I spent most of my time zooming out so that I can see more of the map. If you zoom in to enjoy the VR effects - you can really only see a very small section of the map. I think it would actually be better if you played in VR using your desktop link and then playing the regular game on a "big screen" - in any case - VR has some potential here - but not quite yet. After a week or so trying VR I gave up and downloaded the regular version from Steam.
2. For whatever reason, I could not get into Civ6. However, Civ 7 I have been totally engrossed in 6 or 7 hour long games. There is a good quality here - but I do agree with the community that it seems like missing touches weren't well thought out - For example - If I have 3 or 4 heroes and they are in wait mode - I haven't been able to find an easy way to find out where they are (or my other units) without searching the map for them. Also - maybe it is just me but when a unit is highlighted - it doesn't really stand out very much - especially when you are in the later stages of the game and there is a lot going on in the map. I also agree with other commentators about the victory screen - ability to see stats would be good. Otherwise - it is just an empty feeling when you win.
3. Questions - do most people generally consider civ 6 or civ 7 the better game? I am wondering if I should give civ 6 another try?
4. Question - I downloaded my copy from Steam - I am reading about "modding" which to be honest I have never done for any game. How exactly does that work. Are there a lot of viruses in mods?
5. If modding is the way to go - are there good ones to consider for Civ 7?

Thanks!

Welcome! :wavey:

I think everyone has different preferences. Civ6 is my personal favorite entry in the franchise, but that doesn't mean someone else will like it.

If mods are downloaded from a legitimate site, like here or the Nexus, they should be clean.

I have only played Civ 1, 2 and 6, but I don't consider Civ 6 a masterpiece. It is okay, it is polished, but it feels like a board game sometimes often.

On the other hand, Civ 6 has many similarities to Civ 7 and you may see it differently now. It took me four years until I began to like the game.

Mods make the game so much better. I play all the time and I would have quit long ago without them. Get the application CivMods that someone from here made. You can use it to search, install, and keep mods up to date. Use the most downloaded filter in the search section. Read about them if you want or just get what looks good to you. They are all hosted here and are totally clean. I'm running 30 mods right now and none of them change stats or gameplay, they just give you the information, menus, and ability to play the game easier.

One more tip, don't ever put a commander to sleep. The only units I put to sleep are in my borders or the second rank of an offensive front line.

Thanks regarding the Mods. Also - regarding the sleep tip. So what do you do when you have a unit that you don't plan to do anything with for awhile. If you hit the skip turn - you are then forced to continuously come back and do the same movement - or is that the recommended approach?

The alternative is to take 1 unit out of the commander so they're both on same tile. Put both to sleep. The unit will awaken when an enemy approaches and it don't take but 1 movement to repack the unit then you boogie out of there with the commander OR set up the rest of the units and defend/attack.

Thanks for all the advice! Question - I downloaded the civmods - really cool stuff but I am not sure that I doing this correctly. I downloaded the game from Steam. The file structure does not look like the instructions so I added a "Mod" folder. I then had the Civmod program download the mods that I chose to that folder. However, it doesn't look correct. For example - one of the mods that I downloaded was the MantisMaestro's Compact Production Chooser which is supposed to put the production info on one line so you have a more compact production list and don't need to scroll so much - but this didn't change after doing the mod. Is there something specific that I need to do for Steam games? There doesn't appear to be any Mods for Civ7 on Workshop. Can I mod steam games outside of workshop?

1. The patch just dropped. I wouldn't recommend playing with mods until they catch up
2. Wrong folder, you need to put them into "%localappdata%\Firaxis Games\Sid Meier's Civilization VII\Mods"

Long time Civ player but have resisted 7 so far because of the obvious growing pains.

One quick question - Marathon. Is it still on 7 because that's the only way I play.

Yes. I believe there were some problems with it early on, but I think they've been resolved? I'm an Epic player myself so I'm not certain.

Regarding wrong folder - that is my confusion. when I look at the Steam folder - I see Steam - Steamapps - common - sid meier's civilization vii and then there are only two folders: Base or DLC - so I added Mods. Have you added the mods to a steam version of Civ7? If anyone has - please tell me what your file structure looks like becasue it seems like it is different.

Normally you don't add mods to steam folder, it's managed by steam and Civ7 is not exception. You need to put it there program data lives, not programs themselves. Try copying the link I gave into Windows explorer address line.

I almost never use "Sleep". I always use "Alert" so that the unit(s) will wake up if a potential enemy comes in range.

I've had rare occasions where a Fleet Commander doesn't have an alert option available, so I try either moving them a tile or just "Skip turn" for that unit.
I'll try to put them on Alert the next turn. Units garrisoned in cities or towns are always on Alert.

Relatively rare uses of Sleep:
  • Near the end of Exploration or Modern, I have fleets that aren't going to do anything more in the age.
  • About midway through Modern, I have grabbed all of the artifacts I can. I put my explorers where I can find them easily (on different continents) and sleep until I finish learning Hegemony
  • Sending a colonist to found a new town in Antiquity, when I come across a hostile IP. Get the colonist back to a settlement and sleep until the danger has been neutralized.

I did a search for it - and nothing came up :-(

I just have to hit spacebar X times each turn where X = number of commanders. If I need to sleep a bunch of units somewhere I'll bunch them up and have just one of them awake so I don't forget them.

Totally understand - but here is my point. Let's say I just finished a military campaign and have 3 or 4 leaders. I don't necessarily need them active at the moment so I will put them in a city and hit the Alert button. Ok - that is great and they will wake up if an enemy comes close. However, let's say in 10 moves or so - I want to attack someone else - if it is the later stages of the game - I may have 15 or 20 cities and don't exactly recall where I put this leader. I then need to cycle one by one to find him. This get's even more frustrating if I have 2 or 3 leaders that I need to find. Is there a way to see a report or list of all of your units with their location? Maybe this is just me being a dumbass :-)

Hah! I found the answer in another forum post. I needed to unhide my explorer files. Probably a duh moment for you all - but to me - this was a "what do you mean some files are hidden!" moment :-) IMHO - this should be noted on the general instructions of the download screen. I know it seems like a no brainer but for us noobs - this is good info :-)

You're not a dumbass at all. The report or list with location just does not exist. It's a huge problem that I hope they fix one day. This is why I never put a commander on sleep or alert. Your options are to leave them awake and skip every turn or write notes on where you left them. I already keep a paper and pen beside me when I play to take notes. That really shouldn't be necessary. The game failed, not you.

I put them on alert typically.
