I have seen quite a lot of specific bugs that people are reporting but is anyone else like me just getting general shoddiness in the game. The game crashes a hell of a lot (perhaps 10 - 15 times during the average game). I am also getting periods when the game slows down unbelievably (about 10-15 sec just to recenter the map). I am also getting save game files being corrupted and unloadable.

Firstly, shame on you Firaxis/Infrogames CivIII is a class game, what were you thinking putting it out in pieces like you have and ruining the experience for everyone. :(

Secondly, is there a solution to my problems, I can't give specific situations that this is happening really as it all seems quite random. I am running no other apps at the same time and my P.C. is way over the minimum spec. Do I have problems with my P.C. or is it acknowledged that this is a common problem?

hmmmmmn

Well having played several games of Civ III, on a decent computer, and not once having any of the problems mentioned, I can only say either you are really unlucky or your computer sucks a bit more than you think.

sorry, but it certainly isn't a problem with Civ III, unless I was the one that got lucky and got a copy with no problems like them.:crazyeyes

The lack of replies suggest that others are not having the same problems as me so maybe there is something wrong with my PC. There shouldn't be though as it is relatively new and I like to think that I keep it in good order. Oh well if the patch doesn't work I will have to get the ol' defragging spanner out.

I also get lots of unpredictable crashes (actually, lockups - can't use End Task, have to restart). I can reload from autosave, but civ then locks up the same way on the next turn unless I do things significantly different (demand everyone remove troops from my territory, change unit movements & production, etc). Sometimes it's quite hard to get to a non-lockup situation.
So you're not alone - I've seen *plenty* of crash reports on this board but every situation seems to be slightly different. I upgraded my drivers & stopped all other programs as firaxis suggests but with no change. I'm downloading the patch now -- hope it'll help, but I don't see anything on the change list about resolving miscellaneous stability/compatibility issues.. if not I'll prolly have to sell it. gah! frustrating that it's just stable enough to be *almost* playable on my machine.

At last, someone else in the same boat as me. If anyone from Firaxis is passing, is it noted that there are general stability problems or do I have something wrong with my machine?

the only time i've had the game crash on me is when i try to view the palace. every time i got an improvement on my palace, i'd view it and the game would crash. so now i just don't ever look at my palace and i'm fine. no crashes.

as for slowness, no problems here. maybe it's your computer?
