Since organization of ideas is currently at it's low, I thought I should lead this fine nation in making a decision (hey, it is my job, right?)

So this thread will serve as a place for citizens to determine a general strategy for the early game. The general strategy will be determined, and then, the separate decisions will be polled. This is done so we won't have some decisions that do not agree with other decisions.

Here are some general strategies from the SEER Tech thread:
Update
  • Build the Oracle and get either civil service or something on the machinery path.
  • Research military techs for defense and resource location.
  • Research alphabet and trade for earlier techs
  • Get religion, either via the Oracle or researching it ahead of when the Oracle is built.

You do not have to pick from those either, those are just onesthat people have suggested.

If you're looking for strategic focus try:

  • Militant, conquest oriented
  • Militant, defense oriented
  • Peaceful, non-Religious
  • Peaceful, Religious

If we see where we fit within these categories it might help us decide many issues. I know we can combine these further (and be, say, militant, conquest oriented and religious) but I'm trying to keep it simple.

Here's my suggestion:

The Balanced Strategy
This strategy will balance between the military, religion and infrastructure. Since we don't have copper near by, were going to have to pray for horses or iron (preferably iron, but our UU makes horses more have a little more appeal.) Since we've researched ourselves onto Bronze Working and we won't be founding one of the three early religions, we should shoot for Confucianism. This will require us to build the oracle.

Using the Oracle to get CoL, it gives us Confucianism (potentially 2 gold per city, 1 happiness per city, more with other wonders/buildings), courthouses, which are absolutely necessary for expansion (whether it be through settling or through conquest) and Caste System which is great for a Specialist Economy.

But enough of the benefits of CoL. We can get the oracle rather easily, however the tricky part comes in when we don't have bronze, and we've already spent some time on the other techs. We need archery, and either Animal Husbandry or Iron Working to defend ourselves. AH and IW are both crapshoots, as we just have to get lucky with hidden horses or iron. The other tech we need is going to be pottery (and we need to research writing while construction of the oracle is underway.)

Most likely the research path will have to be Animal Husbandry --> Archery/Pottery --> Mysticism --> Polytheism --> Priesthood --> Writing

Animal Husbandry is put first since we have a settler on the way, and if we have horses than we need to know where to settle. If we do have horses, it is possible to delay archery, but if we don't, archery is going to be a mus. Iron Working takes a while, and would probablly put the Oracle out of the picture if we needed it.

Now while doing all this, wed be cycling production between units, granaries, barracks, and definitely a settler or 2 and worker.

This way we get a religion, get a wonder, and keep a strong enough military to defend ourselves from barbs, napoleon and bismark.

This part is a little into the future, and does not have to be sued with the rest of the strategy:

After this is all said and done, we would look to bribe Napoleon into war against Bismark, wait until they weaken each other and invade France. We should wipe him out, and possibly later take out Bismark. Napoleon declares war easily so he will be easier to bribe and Bismark expands fast, so we cant let him get out of control. Napoleon is a definite threat to us, so we need to dispose of him, and Bismark comes in a close second.

I would put archery first; both archery and settler finish same turn.
Then settler and warrior can go to next site, while capital builds two archers
and we research AH (to horses and cows).
Second site must be close to gold and cows because we aren't creative and
mysticism+obelisk or writing+library still far.
Best regards,

As has been stated several times in the other thread, we don't want to waste the Oracle's power on CoL if we can get something more expensive.

Research Pottery, Writing, and then whatever is on the path to CoL followed by what is needed for Oracle. Start on CoL and the Oracle so that it will finish just after CoL is done. By waiting a while we make the religion techs cheaper via other civs researching them first. This method is generally called the CS slingshot, because Civil Service is typically the most expensive thing available.

If the high level players say it's possible to get the Oracle and CoL around the same time, I believe them as long as we don't have a position which makes that undoable.

Here's my suggestion:

Pray for horses or iron? Wouldn't that require use of a religion? :mischief:

I like ice's idea. It's almost what I do in my warlords games that has the CS slingshot "Impossible" by adding Maths to Civil Service's requirements. I know it's possible, but I do think its risky. Even if the level is Prince, one must "bee-line" to the Oracle CS Slingshot. Even the BW detour is risky. I know it can be done. You can call me a chicken, but I'd rather not take the risk.
Oh, and in this no-religion context... Let's HOPE for horses, then!

Our Chieftain said has a problem to settle 2nd city before see horses.
And that is a valid concern,by sure. Nobody can say it is wrong.
But just the strategic resource do not give the units; we need a powerhouse
that can quickly build the necessary and desired units.
Let's take the settler (and warrior) there and settle; city begin working for
itself and when free to build military we shall have the resource.
Best regards,

But if we research AH or IW before the settler finishes, we would be able to gauge where our 2nd city could go to grab *those* resources.

I think our general strategy ought first to be that of a builder: develop our infrastructure, military, and economy (so we can research and expand aggressively). Second, we should play off our aggressive and expansive characteristics - not to mention our Mongolian heritage - and aim to dominate our home continent, preferably by annexing the territory of all other civs. Third, it’d be amusing in the end game to play against the stereotype of Genghis Khan and attempt to win the game through diplomacy.

This strategy will give us a good mix of building, war, and finally peaceful domination – fun for everyone! If we get our economy cranked up we should be able to research COL with or without using the Oracle (I’d rather use the Oracle for Civil Service or maybe Metallurgy). COL of course will give us Confucianism, and as donsig has pointed out (at least once or twice) it’s desirable eventually to acquire a religion. We’ll need to research Pottery (cottages for income and granaries so our food-poor nation can grow) and Priesthood (so we can build the Oracle) because these are on the road to COL.

First, though, we should research Animal Husbandry. Our scouts have pushed back a lot of the fog, and we have yet to see the borders of France or Germany. Soon barbs will start to appear, and we’ll need some defense. We’re going to need to defend our territory from the barbs. (Because there’s so much open land France and Germany will probably concentrate on grabbing that before they think of attacking us.) When defending against barbs, I prefer to take the battle to them: position troops on the borders of my territory and pick them off as they approach. Assuming we have horses nearby so we can build chariots, they’ll be able to fend off barbs for a decent period of time. If we don’t have horses we may need to rethink our entire strategy and move Iron Working up in the research queue. But our UU requires horses so I have to believe they’re close by.

BTW, as part of our strategic thinking we should consider how many cities we want to build. Ideally we should build 3 or 4 cities and let the barbs and other civilizations build the rest of our cities for us.

I like the cheiftan's idea of the "balanced plan" I'd much prefer to avoid AH and pottery so we can just rush for the oracle and code of laws, but it's clear people aren't budging on seeing as many resources as possible before they choose where to settle.

But are horses really that scarce? In all my played games (I estimate them to be 50) I only once suffered from not having horses at my disposal. And I even won that game!

I like Bertie's idea of Ghengis the Diplomat. :) I'm a builder at heart, too. Horses are for offensive capabilities. I'm in the peaceful and religious category.

Just to point out, one of our huge failures last game was not founding a religion. Although there will be 1 or 2 techs that are more costly than CoL. CoL has three huge benefits which outweigh getting more expensive techs. If it was up to me as a game developer, I would of easily made CoL worth more.

Wrong assumption -- we can't pick CoL with the Oracle because we'll already have it. If we were to go that path, the plan should be to research CoL at the same time we build the Oracle.

I'd have to disagree with you on this one. Our failure was that we used all our resources to shoot for a religion and then missed it. If we had concentrated on monarchy for happiness and economic techs, we could have won IMO.
