Carthage strategy

So I finally finished antiquity with 12/8 settlements! Never got a wonder, missed the second science point by one turn. Full military and economic paths done. 179 turns, wow. I do have longer ages turned on but I've never had one close to this many turns.

I'm changing my mind about Augustus being so great for Carthage. I'm sure I'd do better on another try with him but I'm definitely going Ashoka WR next time, like the poster above mentioned. Happiness and gold were terrible even though I had a trader in almost every settlement and city state. This is why I had to make every town into a trade town as OP asked about. Of course I got happiness crisis. I have had it every time except my very first age transition. Ended up with six camels and five commanders though!

I couldn't even afford to buy all the UIs I had available and I didn't get the UQ in four of the settlements.

Carthage, the city, is a monster at 31 pop and almost 100 hammers. I can't wait to see how it does in exploration. I guess I'll be ignoring economic path because I don't think I can keep going with more settlements.
Sounds like your happiness issues are really giving you problems. In my Carthage game, buying Punic Ports in all the settlements where they make sense was not a problem. That was with Xerxes KoK and 10% more gold. With Augustus' discount, it should be even easier.

And, as I mentioned in the other thread, you will very likely get the happiness crisis if you exceed the settlement cap when the crisis hits. I don't think it's worth it, at least in Antiquity.

In my latest Carthage game I tried Himiko Queen of Wa, and found it to be very potent. She basically solves the early game science issues, if you just play somewhat diplomatically. I went into Abbassids into Meiji Japan and am enjoying my most dominant deity game yet without conquering anything from the AI. Abbassids are just incredible exploration civ. I suspect they are up next for the nerf hammer.

My personal favorite Carthage method is Amina Carthage- funneling all my resources into Carthage when I can provides both a huge financial boost and overall high yields that allow you to get through the tech/culture trees fairly easily. The high production of the cothon allows you to zoom towards wonders, with the most common spawns I've seen favoring navigable rivers, desert, and oddly enough The Grand Canyon (which I've found on three of my many Amina starts. The extra boost to military strength on plains and deserts, combined with the numidian cavalry still being overpowered, make it easy to both defend your territory if you want to turtle OR go after your neighbors if you favor conquest. Pairing her up with the momentos that 1, give you a free military attribute point, and 2, give your cities 50 production when you take a military point only further fuels snowballing as her thanks to one of her unique quest lines awarding a military point as well. I always save them for wonders, and it helps with some of the more competitive ones (Hanging Gardens, for example.). The fact that you get two merchants/colonists for the price of one also means you waste less time/resources buying or producing them as well.

Overall, a VERY fun combo.

It is... I also enjoyed Carthage's trading and wonder building with the high production from the cothon and with double merchants per purchase or build, I was able to get a lot of trade routes going with the help of a few allies that helped me extend the routes throughout the map and camels that helped me increase the resource slots at Carthage. I was at 22 resources at Silk Road by the end. I even had decent technology with level 3 Numidian cavalry by the end. I had 5 wonders out of 7 but hey, I was competing with other good players online whom were a challenge. I also like the double colonist that you get when you purchase or build them, allowing you to expand faster.

I struggled with science until I littered the landscape of my towns with science city state unique improvements
Yeah since Carthage can't house libraries in other cities it struggles a little bit with technology. However, those level 3 Numidian cavalries seemed powerful.

In my last game with Carthage I've made all my tows into trade ones and since they can host one codex with the right policy, you could generate some amount of science. Not as good as others, but with rapid expansion you also grab some science from rural districts so in the end it's ok.

Yeah, if you're trying to get science path, that's mandatory... I always try to get points there for attribute points next age

I am running a game with Carthage led by Jose Rizal ... hadn't tried him yet. I am running that same policy to house the codexes.

Isabella keeps forward settling me, so I keep taking her towns. The science legacy path is definitely slower, but I'm doing well on military and economic. I'm resisting the temptation to build more wonders, since I want to leave some land tiles on my peninsula for quarters in the later ages. Got some coastal towns, so I'm hopeful they will be destinations for my treasure fleets. I was able to ally with Friedrich Oblique and get Xerxes KOK to friendly. He seems to like that I'm kicking Izzy's butt.
