I'd love to play an online game against the guy who plays Civ while drunk, though.

Lol, who ever said I was playing drunk. I just like my scotch.

Ok, I used to play World of WarCrack and EverCrack drunk, with friends who were also drunk, and we formed guilds for drunken players...but I'm well over that now. Civ just doesn't play well that way.

However, I did come home for lunch on Thursday and played for three hours (whoops -- my excuse for turning an hour lunch into a three hour lunch was a "personal emergency, but everything's OK now, thanks.")

You didn't mention that the "emergency" was Mao Zedong sending hordes of knights into your territory, then? ;-)

OP: Get your Disk 1 of Civ 4, and ask your GF to keep it somewhere safe, and she'd only give it to you if you've been a good boy (like she ever will).
That's probably the only way you'll stop playing the game.
Your only other choice is to infect her with the bug, so that she'll sit at home and play with/against you.
