I have been frustrated to be on a relatively small continent/island where the room for expansion is limited, and finding no barbarians to acquire knowledge from. But the galleys were not available until after map-making which is after writing which is after alphabet.
I used the edit rules to remove the prerequisite map-making for the galley, so that the galley are now available at the start of the game. This makes more sense to me.
Map-making is still necessary to start trading maps and to building a harbor. Personally, I think it would be interesting is areas of the map returned to fog when your unit left them prior to the skill of map-making!
I also increased the movement points of all naval vessels (after the galley) by one, and I'm not sure if that is going to be enough. On those large maps, it takes forever to get anywhere. It was a good thing Columbus' ships moved faster, or we might all still be Iriquois. It can easily take a couple of centuries to take a relatively short trip across the map.
